Hi, my 3 month old son was born with mongolian spots on his back and bum and i was just wondering how long i can expect him to have them for? He has a large dark area on his back, then a darker spot on his bum. Will they disappear gradually? And at what age?

My son was also born with Mongolian Spots and he is now 6 and going into first grade and they have disappeared... Thankfully, they used to look like bruises on his back/rear area... I made sure it was properly documented in his medical record so there would be NO chance of being accused of hurting my child...

All 3 of my kids have them, my daughter is 7, hers went away at about 3 1/2; my son just turned 3 and it is fading, but still there; my other son is only 4 months, so he has a way to go!

My son was also born with a sizeable spot just above his rear. It has lightened over the years (he's now 10), but it is still visible.

My little girl has a big one in the centre of her lower back going onto her bottom, she is almost 3 now and although it has faded a little it is still visable and definately looks like a big bruise!

I know about a woman (40+) that still has hers.. Her mother told me. But she got her spot behind one of her ears.

Both of my kids was born with it. My son had a small spot on his bum. Havn't checked lately so I don't know if it's still there. Have too do that tomorrow. Allways thought it was a permanent mark. My daughter has a big one on her lower back and bum. It cover almost 60% of her bum. I hoped it was going to stay just too make sure that she woun't end up in the porn industry. ;o)

My 9 yr old's mongolian spots have faded to the point that you have to look real close and then it's only barely darker than his skin tone. Same with my 11 yr old. My 3 yr old still has a slight bluey tint but it's fading too. My soon to be 1 yr old's marks have toned down but still have a slight "bruised" look. I'm more worried about the reactions his stork bite birth mark on his rear will get. I'd attach a pic of it if I knew how.

My 3 year old son also was born with one on his bottom and a couple small ones on his calf. The spots on his leg faded by the time he was about 1. The largest spot (on his bottom) has faded significantly, but is still there.

My son has the same! I had bever heard of it before having him. He is 14 months now. They have definatley faded but are not at all gone. The doctor told me that they should fade completely by the time he is 3 or 4 but he did say in rare cases they stay til puberty.

Hi i was told by the age of five, but my daughter is five soon and she still clearly has them. I wouldnt worry about them too much, as long as it is documentated in your childs medical notes, otherwise they can be mistaken for bruises. Hope that helps x

Hello, my daughter is half Korean and was also born with the spots. She has one on her arm, neck and back. I also thought they were bruises and never thought about notifying the daycare. Thank you for the advise.

My daugther has it all on her back as well. The doctor thought it was bruising when he first seen and said don't worry that will clear up shortly on its own, all I could do was chuckle cause I knew the marks were not going away anytime soon. But when he saw that her Dad was black I think he finally clued into what it actually was.

I have 5 biracial boys, all of them were born with the spot, some have fadded some are still there, sometimes they go away completely, sometimes not. I was also told that at birth it has to be put in their medical record of where it is and how dark it is, because if they is ever a suspicion of abuse they know that the spot is not a bruise!! Crazy huh!!?

My little brother had spots covering his shoulders and entire diaper area when he was born. My mom thought he was bruised.... I would get in trouble for calling him "blue butt".

My husband was very proud of his sons' mongolian spots. They will fade over time. I don't remember how long it took but they do fade.

Both of my children have them ive talked to their doctor and he said most of the time they fade by 4 or 5 but i know teens who still have them so it all depends on the child

Where we all of you when I was pregnant??? LOL  My husband and I have the only bi-racial child on either side of our families and apparently it slipped all of my friends minds to tell about mongolian spots.  I freaked out when I saw it after we got home from the hospital and was sure a nurse had dropped my baby.  It's really funny now, but my mom was staying with us and for two days we were worried.  My daughter's spot is is on her bum and covered one entire side when she was born.  It was exactly how you describe your son's (with a dark area and then a darker spot)  Now, it just looks like a small bruise at the top of her bum (the dark area is gone and the darker spot remains).  I completely agree with everyone else about telling others who keep your child.  My doctor said it would go away by the time she's three, however, an acquaintance of mine said she still has a small spot and she's in her 30's.

Hi Sarah! My son, now almost 7, was born with a mongolian spot on his lower back. I would say he was about 3 years old when it finally went away. Now, at age 6, you would never even know he had one.

Hi! Thank you both for replying - and especially for the advice about telling people who babysit my son about the mongolian spots. I hadn't even thought about that as an issue but will definitely be sure to tell people from now on. There's no way i want to be accused of hitting him or anything like that! Take care both of you and have a great Easter weekend!

My daughter was born with Mongolian spots on her lower back and her bottom. She is two now and they have faded some in color. But they are still there. I agree with the other post to make sure that you inform people that watch your child about them so that they know what they are.

My son has those, too, and I asked my son's doctor about it.  He said they usually go away by around the time they start school, but it's different with every child.  As the pigments in his skin change, they will gradually fade and eventually go away.  Just remember to let anyone who takes care of him know about them so they don't think you're abusing your child.  Some people who aren't familiar with mixed children don't know what they are and think they are bruises.
