I would suggest visit a natural hair stylist or salon to get advice

We did a big chop last year just because my daughter refused to care for her hair and I couldn't take it anymore. The first style she had - which she kept up for awhile, was a girl hawk. She had it buzzed - sometimes with designs - along the sides and longer up top. We'd flat iron it, curl it, even got her some spray paints to do it a multitude of colors. We've since grown that out and are working on just letting her hair grow back out. It's now about 3" all the way around.
Some other styles we've done:
- braids (with and without extensions)
- micros (with extensions only braided part way down the rest hanging loose)
- twists
- afro with scarfs/bandanas/headbands holding her hair back.
- flat ironed
