My grandchildren are African/Caucasion. Both kids have inherited their mom's African hair. I have heard African skin and scalp run on the dry side and special products need to be used. I've found a number of suggestion for dryness on this site, but would like to know how often can their hair be washed?

my daughter is 1/2 black and 1/2 white. She's 5 and I only wash her hair once a week.

once a week unless they're into sports and getting extremely sweaty all the time and their hair gets veeery dirty. Or i wash my girls' hair a few times a week in the summer just bc theyre getting sand in it or gotten it to the point where it needs to get washed. They also get the treatment, of leave in conditioner or moisturizer, detangler, and if I dont put their hair up its let to dry naturally after I comb it out.

My son's hair is very dry and I wash his hair every other night. To me, it's not what you wash with or how often, it's what you do afterwards to help the dryness. After I wash his hair I put Blue Magic on his scalp and that helps a lot with the dryness. Any other questions please e-mail me I would be happy to help.

Hi! There are products by a company called 'Mixed Chicks'. The products specalize in our kind of hair. They also have great tips on how to care for bi-racial hair. I have a daughter who is 12 now and for years we have struggled with her hair. There is also product on the market called Keratin and it is protein based. You can only have a professional stylist use this product on older kids. This made my daughter's much more manageable for her...and now she can do her hair without my intervention. But it was EXPENSIVE! Mixed Chicks is a wonderful option...especially for little ones.

My children are black and white and I use a product from Family Dollar for their hair. It is called "Kids Organic" It has shea butter and Olive oil in it. This product comes with a conditioning shampoo and detangling moisturizing hair lotion. After I wash their hair I put the hair lotion in it and braid it. My oldest daughter is 7 and over the past 7 years I have struggled trying to find the perfect hair products for her. I have used top of the line expensive ones but could never find anything that worked just right. I started using the "kids organic" about 6 months ago and still love how it makes their hair so beautiful.

Usually wash their hair about once a week.Beware of using products that have paffafin wax or alcohol in them.Read ingredients. I learned that from a beauty salon and she was right. I have 2 girls that are bi-racial and one has really tight curls. I use this product called Elasta QP. Does wonders. No wax or alcohol. Pink lotion...I wouldn't do. Has the wax in it. I live in Ohio and I find it in an Africian women hair shop. It's also online. It's not that expensive and goes a long way. They have the shampoo, conditioner, and oil moisturizer. Trust me on this if you can find it. If you need something quick, you can buy the olive oil shampoo and moisturizer in a green bottle. It's all natural. But nothing does wonders like the QP. Leaves their hair really soft.

Vicky,

My daughters are older now and I learned something the hard way -- don't assume that two children in the same family have the same type of hair. My daughters are quite different, as is their hair. So check each child to see when they might start to scratch their head because it's dirty, or when they are having a hard time managing their hair. That will help you also to determine how often to wash it.

Stacy is right, if you keep the little girls hair in braids or twists after you moisturize it it will be easier to care for and less painfull to comb out. I washed my daughters hair two or three time a week because she was so active but always used Pink lotion and braided it. We also keep the ends clipped regularly. AND NO MATTER WHAT ANYONE SAYS DO NOT PERM HER HAIR until she is through puberty. it does matter.

SOOOO RIGHT!!! im still trying to correct my hair after many years of chimacal straighting(there was not the resorces there are now. my mom just listened to her friends).  hair texture will never be the same afterwards.

I LOVE using natural products in my daughter's hair. I wash it with Arbonne Baby Care hair and body wash. Follow that with jojoba oil (before blow drying) then coconut oil and last African Royale BRX Braid & Extensions Sheen Spray (bronnerbros.com - this stuff is wonderful and contains no alcohol). It can also be used daily to moisturize the hair (moisture stops breakage). It sprays in a light mist but the coverage is fantastic. I do not like Pink Moisturizer it's too greasy. What I use does not leave your hair heavy and greasy. And of course I use Arbonne Baby Care products because I am a consultant with them and I love them - visit desires.myarbonne.com to read about the product. Just don't use any products that contain PETROLEUM - that blocks moisture rather than adding it.

My daughters hair is very curly, on the dryer side, but EXTREMELY thin like my hair. I have tried everything that I can possibly find to use in her hair with no good results, ever. Her hair does not get "nappy" but because it is so thin it gets knots at the ends. I have tried braiding, but because it is so thin it only works with 2 braids - any more and it looks weird. Does anyone have any products that they use on their child with similar hair texture?

Read the ingredients listed. If it has any alcohol in it, then don't use it. It will dry the hair out and make it worse.

Quoting Da'Vita:

I usually wash my daughter's hair once a week and then use Luster's Pink Lotion after that or I use S-Curl. Always wash and then dry their hair and then moisturize and comb or brush out their hair. It can become matted and very nappy. My daughter's hair becomes very matted and nappy and it takes me an hour to get all of the naps out of her hair and it is very painful for her.

Your daughter might be in need of a hair cut. Once you cut the damaged ends off it will not tangle as bad.

Hi Da'Vita. I always make sure my daughter's hair is damp--either by spraying it with plain water or using that kids' hair de-tangler--Johnson's makes a good one and most drugstores do a less expensive knock off that works just as well. I never try to work with her hair while it is dry. That is so painful. I also start from the ends and work up. That helps as well.

You should not wash the hair more than once a week. Daily washing is very drying. If the kids go swimming or participate in sports and get very sweaty then yes, more washing is needed for good hygiene's sake. Girls' hair should be in "protective" styles, such as braids or twists and it is simply easier to keep boys' hair short. PLEASE do not cut off a little girl's hair to "make it easier" and PLEASE don't leave a protective style until it gets fuzzy and old looking--2-3 days MAX. No matter what, moisturize after washing and then style and let the hair dry naturally.
