Teaching my daughter to value the African American side of her heritage.

My 6 1/2 year old daughter is half Asian and half black. I am happy with what I am teaching her in terms of positive history, culture, etc of being Asian. I am not so happy with my knowledge of the African American side of her history. I grew up in Hawaii so a lot of what I learned growing up centered around Asia / Polynesia. Can anyone provide me with resources that might help me teach my daughter more about being African American? She wants to learn, but I want to be selective in what I teach her. I had a negative result when I gave her a book about Rosa Parks. She became very upset and stuck her foot in my face and told me that my people had treated her people very badly. I dont think she is quite ready to learn about the Civil Rights movement or slavery etc, but I would love for her to learn about black scientific and mathematical achievement, medical discoveries led by African American doctors or nurses, etc. I hope this makes sense.

The Civil Rights Movement is probably not the right place to start when trying to educate a 61/2 year old about black history. My children are biracial. Their dad is black. Unfortunately, he only sees them every other weekend and isn't much for teaching them anything. I would go to the local library and ask the librarian if he/she could recommend some books on black history. Anything but civil rights. Start with that. I would also have your husbands family talk about stories of what experiences they have had with growing up being black.
