This is probably the most delicate of subjects for me as a mother...and I have no idea how to approach it.

My son will be 3 at the end of August and lately Im having a hard time getting him to leave his "bits" alone...every chance he gets he's down "there" and can get rather aggressive...

I know it's absolutely normal for children to become curious and explore their bodies however I'm just a little worried that my son is a bit excessive in that area.

It happens in front of friends and family and I'm worried it may happen at kindy aswell, it's gotten to the point where he is hiding away from me to do it and it's getting in the way of toilet training.

I don't want to send him the message that it's wrong or bad and what he is doing is naughty...but how do I let him know that there is a time and a place and perhaps there is such a thing as "too much" for a little boy of his age???

He doesn't have a very big vocabulary, although he understands everything I say to him but I find that creates a communication barrier for us.

Hi Lauren,

I know a lot of parents have experienced this with their boys and don't know how to approach their young sons about it. During my time at Focus on the Family, I came across this subject on the frequently asked question area of their website. I think you may find if very helpful and probably comforting too. http://bit.ly/JAfjXq

wow my son does this too. every chance he gets. He will also be 3 at the end of august.

he has always played with himself and i didnt think much of it because i know its common for them to do so..a curiosity thing for them..but lately its been frequent and even in front of people. when hes watching tv,when he takes a bath, while he eats, even right before he falls to sleep.my son is potty trained but when i started to potty train thats when he done it the most. i asked everyone for advice and some say tell him to stop or make sure he keeps something in his hands, or keep him busy, and most say dont do nothing its normal. but it bothers me that he may be enjoying it. i have found that when i tell him "stop thats nasty" or "no brandon not now", he would stop. every time i catch him doing it he stops and says "nasty". so now he does it when no ones around. havent figured out how to get him to stop completley but i hope that he'll grow out of it for a while...
