My Son was 15months old when I first started him to use the potty, I first started on the toilet then got a potty and now he gets excited when he goes to the potty, though I ask him if he is finished and then when he is he puts out his hand and I give him one square of toilet paper, it's so cute and he wipes himself, gets up and then we go put it in the big toilet, for the last two days he hasn't don't a number two in his nappy and has gone to both the toilet and the potty, I am so proud and he knows it

My grandson will be 3 in Sept we were working with him right after he turned 2 and things were going good. Well my daughter has been going through alot in the last few months and stopped working with him... I think it needs to be worked on again will everyone on the same page. If he is here with this dad or other grandma we would all be working towards the same goals...

Well my almost 10 year old was potty trained by the time he was 2 1/2 and my now almost 4 year old has been trained since a week after his 2nd birthday. I found if I made potty time fun they would appreciate it more. I use to put Fruit Loops in the toilet and tell them they had to try and aim for them. They thought I was nuts, but it worked for both of them

we started potty-training when he was 2 y/o. It was an on and off thing. A two weeks before his 3rd birthday, I took him to Target, made him choose which "big boy" underware he wants because I told him that Mama isn't buying pull-ups anymore once all the diapers at home are gone... I think that was inspiring, but what really forced him was having him run around commando for 2 days. There was a few almost made it to the potty moments on his first day. After that, it was all good. At night, we made sure he used the potty before going to bed, On the third day, we never used a diaper again.

We started training my son at 2 1/2 and he was trained fairly quickly from poopy diapers, but the wee took until two months after his third birthday. Probably would have gone longer if I hadn't given up on pull ups and gone to underwear. Once I switched to underwear it took about a week! Pull ups didn't allow him to feel the wetness enough, although it's been almost 5 years so they may have changed. Also, he didn't like his little toilet at all, using the big toilet like a big boy helped with #2. We used one of the little seats that you can get to sit on top of the toilet, once we got that he refused to use the "baby potty" and he was more motivated to poop like a big boy.

my son was potty trained when he was about 2-3 months away from being 3. we just switched to underwear and it went so quickly as far as the peeing. After a week he was even able to leave the house with out accidents and about a month later able to nap without a pull-up. He is 3 and 2 mos now and still wears pull-ups at night but does go many nights without peeing. Now pooping is another story. He can poop in the potty and has many times but is now completely opposed to even trying to poop in the potty. He either hides in the corner or waits until he gets his pullup on at night. Very frustrating but the Dr. says it is very normal. I am hoping this passes soon!!!

My son was potty trained at 2yrs 3 months. One morning he said no pee in bed pee in potty. I put him in underware straight away and only had pull ups at night. He was a nightmare to change from about 1yr so I changed his standing with the pull ups! The night training took more time. He is only now at nearly 5 yrs dry most of the time at night.
DD Was also trained during the day by 2yrs 3 months, but is still wet at night at 3yrs. She has pull ups at night. She gets them and puts them on herself! Soo much easier!
I have a protective sheet on both DD and DS's bed incase of accidents!

My son pooped on the potty by the age of 2 but was almost 3 before he peed on the potty. I finally learned that pull-ups were not as great as I thought. He still peed in them because he was busy and they kept the wet away from him, which is why he pooped in the potty - because he could feel that. With my second child I decided pull-ups were great for naptime, overnight and travelling. Otherwise, straight to underwear and training went much faster and better.

I have 3 sons and they were all dry in the daytime before 2, I think perserverence and not using pull-ups (only on long car journeys). All of mine ran around bottom half naked for about 3-4 days before i introduced pants.( so plan on staying in) and expect accidents!! Also i took a potty everywhere with me even shopping and if they asked, they go whereever you are, (you do get some looks and comments) but if you use pull-ups and tell them to go in them i feel thats very confusing for them, alot of mixed messages. (And also my arguement is noone complains when dogs go where they like!!) Also we had a wee wee dance and made a huge fuss when they got it in the potty they love this and dance with you to the toilet to wave bye bye to it.But if after a day or two theres more puddles than on the potty give it up until there a bit older. And remember they all develop at different stages so don't push it. It'll happen eventually!!!

My son was about 20months old. I had an advantage an older sister and a everyday play group with children girls that were potty trained. I talked about the diapers going bye bye and went shopping for lots of under wear and then slowly introduced the underwear with the potty. Then two wekks later bam. Oh the messes but he got it. He liked shooting cheerios with his pee and especially loved that mommy couldn't do it. It became a game and with the poo. I make sure he had a good amount in fiber in his diet so it would slide right out so to speak and there was little to no pushing involved. By the time he was two no more diapers not even at night that was managing his liquid before bed.

wow what was your trick? i would love to get my 1yr old out of diapers asap i can't imagine changing a 3yr olds diaper.
Hi Liz,
No trick really. Our goal was to keep his awareness alive of when peed or pooed and then to follow his lead. We used cloth diapers from birth and gave him "potty-tunities" at times when he indicated a need to go (you know when you just can tell? ) We used cloth training pants for a short while, but found he would have fewer accidents in underpants. We were really laid back about it and didn't make it an issue. So, he just guided us. We are currently doing the same with our 4mo and, so far, he's even easier. Maybe it's because we're a bit more experienced at spotting his cues or he's better at communicating. He's about half on the potty and half in diapers (mostly because I miss a cue because we're so busy these days) I know in many parts of the world, they don't use diapers and kids are "potty trained" from birth. It just seemed to make sense for our family. Good luck!

I heard recently on the CBC that modern kids potty train much more slowly than past generations because our diapers are "too effective". Alot of you have said that your kids don't mind going in their diapers or training pants. Before, when everyone was using cloth, kids around 2 years old were more likely to realise "Well, this is uncomfortable" and were more enthusiastic about the prospect of going in the potty.
Now I don't know if this is the whole issue, but I use cloth diapers on my son and I hope that the slight coolness and discomfort after he wets will help him potty train. He's only 3 months now though, so I wont worry about it just yet :)

I have three boys and none of them were potty trained until after they turned three. I realized with the first one that it wasn't worth pushing them. Once they decided that they wanted to go to the bathroom and not wear diapers anymore that was it. They all went from diapers to underwear in less than a week.

My son Avery was potty trained within a few weeks of turning 2. He was good during the daytime. However, at night was a different story. He had to wear a pull-up at night until he was 6 years old. He is such a hard sleeper that he just could not wake himself up at night to go to the bathroom. The doctor said no medical problems. However, I had the same problem wetting the bed at night until I was about 7 to 8 years old. I had no medical problems either. My sons doctor said it could be a genetic connection between me and my son and that is probably why he wet the bed at night. He just had to out grow it.

My son is 2 1/2 and we're going through the potty training experience right now. i find that if i leave him in underwear he is good about using the potty and tries to get there on time but if he has on pull ups he just uses them like a diaper and doesn't even try.so whenever i am home i try to leave him in big boy pants and give him lots to drink and alot of selections so that he has more opportunities to make potty. Girls are much easier my 2 girls were trained by 20 months and 24 months with no accidents. i think the boys are more distracted when playing so they tend to forget. try the book toilet training in less than a day, if you follow their instructions he'll be trained in a week with the girls it took less than a day.good luck

My son was interested in the potty at 2 years of age but he wasn't fully potty trained until a couple months after his 3rd birthday. We stopped using pull-ups because he would use them like diapers so I had him in underwear and he had a couple of accidents until one day I didn't change him for a couple of minutes (mean mommy lol!) so he could feel how uncomfortable it was and since then he has been potty trained and gets up during the night to use the toilet! He is four now and I have a 19 month old son also and I am hoping his big brother will be an influence to him when it is time for him to use the potty.

my boys are 10, 8, and 4 on Saturday. my oldest 2 were potty trained within in a few weeks time before they turned 3. my youngest, however, has been daytime potty trained for well over a year. but, he wets almost every night. the only thing i find to keep him dry is to cut off liquid by 6pm (but i feel guilty about not letting him drink) and then waking him up to go potty as i'm going to bed and soon after i wake in the am.
now, my husband was a bed wetter until he was about 5, i think. i don't know if my son isn't nighttime potty trained yet or, if he is a bed wetter. now, after writing that i'm thinking - sounds like the 2 problems are simply the same thing. i'm confusing myself. do bed wetters experience a period of being dry and completely potty trained and then just for no apparent reason start wetting the bed?
i can say i completely stopped with the pull-ups b/c i felt my son thought it was ok to go in them. in the begining he wore them during the day and was able to keep them dry, but not at night.
any advice would be great. his mattress is ruined but i'm not replacing it until he can stay dry. i hate the pee smell and clean it up as best as possible. people who visit don't notice but i do and it irritates me. i'm so frustrated. i asked him once why he doesn't get up and go potty and he told me - "b/c I was sleeping." i thought it was cute but tried not to show any amusement.

Hi, i have two boys 7 and 3. My eldest was not dry in the day until 4 he has just turned 7 and is still wet at night. My youngest boy was dry at 2and a half and practically dry at night. I did nothing different with each boy but have learnt that there is no set age and that it is best to wait until they are ready.
Although the youngest is dry we still only get a minutes warning when he needs a wee but with boys, its so easy - i also have a daughter 9, she was dry at 2 and a half to.
good luck. corrine.

My eldest turns 3 in feb and for wee he is trained other than bedtime and when we are out doing activities or shopping, because we would spend more time in the toilet than getting things done! He has been toilet trained like this for about 4 or 5 months now but will only go to the using a foamy seat insert otherwise he feels that he is going to fall in. No matter how much I try to convince him that I won't let him fall he will still refuse to sit down. So again it makes things hard when we go out because I would have to take the insert everywhere with us.
Now doing a poo in the toilet is a whole nother nightmare!!!! He knows when he needs to poo because he will tell me but again he is terrified to do it in the tiolet. He always says that he wants a nappy on so he can go. So I have no idea what to do with that situation. I know boys can be up to about 4 before they train fully. If you want some tips on what i did just let me know and i will help out the best I can. Good Luck!!!!
