Out of curiosoty, I have a daughter that has had major issues with throwing up and constipation since birth. We have been seeing the GI dr since she was 6months old. We had many tests done and the upper GI we did it showed little blisters in her esophogus (not sure if I spelled that right). If we stay away from the bread prouducts the constipation almost completly goes away we just have a hard time keeping her from breads and so on. Is this one of the side effects or is it always diariha? Thank you, Emily

Emily, has the GI actually done the bloodwork for Celiac? The advice is great to make her GF if she feels better, but it might be better to confirm the diagnoses first. (she must be consuming gluten at the time).

Emily, the blisters in the esophagus most likely result from the GERD. However, my daughter's Celiac symptoms included reflux since birth. Try the gluten free diet. As you can see, there are tons of information and support available. But do not take everything on the internet as truth about Celiac... Many people are misinformed and spread the wrong information that they have heard from others. If their is a local support group, I recommend connecting with them.

Check out the possibility of Celiac Disease. It is a gluten intolerance and affects the small bowel. I am not saying that she has it. But it took me 25 years before I was diagnosed. I have since developed a gluten free pita that is amazing, also a gluten free- dairy free cream puffs, and a wonderful danish.
Aside from that there are many products out there now that are gluten free and very tasty. It should not be too hard to switch her over to this new diet. A little research would be necessary to understand the diet completely, Especially the hidden glutens like malt extract, and hydrolized plant protien. Good luck.

Constipation is not uncommon with celiac. For both my kids and myself it was one of the major problems. THere are a tonne of great gluten free breads available now. My kids love the pamelas gluten free bread mix. I throw one in the bread maker at least three times a week and always have great gluten free bread on hand. Others have tried it and say they can't tell the difference. So much better that the frozen breads that have to be toasted to be edible.

Both of my children and I were chronically constipated. The pediatrician said some people just don't go as often and to give him fruit juice. Once we went gluten free, things improved drastically. I later found out from my herbalist that it is a big warning sign for gluten intolerance and wheat allergy. She said he first thing she suggests whenever a patient has chronic constipation is a gluten-free diet.

In case you haven't discovered it yet, check out Living Without magazine. Their recipes are wonderful and the stories are very supportive. Best of luck to you!

My daughter also had the blisters, now it is scar tissue and is healing well since being gluten free. Its really important if your daughter is Coeliac to be 100% gluten free & she will continue to get better if she sticks to the diet.

Best of luck.

There's no catch all symptom which is why Celiac is so commonly missed or misdiagnosed. I haven't heard of blisters in the esophagus, but anything is possible. Diarrhea is not always a side effect, but it is a very common one. My son did not have it, But that was because he also had a thyroid issue which causes constipation. It started as a growth issue and after seeing a GI and running blood tests we did an endoscopy to confirm Celiac on him. It is very hard at first to deal with the diet change, but there are some wonderful substitutes out there so you can have safe bread. I have also found that if you simply google "gluten free sandwich bread" you will have many recipes and places you can purchase from. I use google a lot when I want to make something I just google for gluten free recipes. There are quite a few blogs out there with very yummy recipes.

Good luck!
