Our son was diagnosed at 14 mths and was put straight onto a pump. He is now 4 1/2 and is doing fantastic. He's last HbA1C was 6.0%, so it has given him greater control of his diabetes. I can only say great things about the Minimed pumps and about insulin pump therapy.

i have a soon to be 13 year old and he has been on the pump since he was three. it is very hard at first. but once you get the hang of it, it becomes second nature. your child will feel so much better about themself. right now at four its your responsability but once your child gets older they will know nothing else. trust yourself and be confident and your child will too.

Yes I did mean the CGM! It is a great thing! I don't leave it on him all of the time because it is a little bit larger needle and a bit large for his little body but it really helps to see trends and make adjustments! I did think that I would not need to get up to do my 2am sugar check but i found it hard to hear the alarm through a baby monitor when it first starts alarming and so I still got up. Much tighter control with it! I found myself obsessing over it at first because you see SOOO much information that I was making every correction I could. I relaxed after a little bit though. I have heard that they are going to start making a smaller one soon!

My four year old just started on his Animas Ping a few days ago. While it is going to take a little getting used to a new way to manage diabetes, I think it is going to be awesome! We had a really hard time getting his set in the second time, the cannula wasn't going in much and he was freaked out! I think the sound has a lot to do with it so the last time we tried, we gave him my hubby's iPod and it helped distract him enough that he didn't even realize it was going in. He loves wearing his pump (bought a couple pump packs on eBay really inexpensive) We chose the Animas because it can deliver the smallest doses (great for a preschooler) and is waterproof. The people we have talkled to and work with at Animas have been wonderful and super supportive. I love the freedom the pump allows us. Not just in what/when he eats but in being able to correct his bs at any time.

Veronica- When you say sensor system...are you talking about the Continuous Glucose Monitoring system? How is that working for you?

Our 4 year old son is on the Minimed.  It is great!!!  Just one thing that we did not like was the sure-T infusion set, it leaves the needle in the body and does hurt if leaned against or sat on.  Going with the pump will be a blessing!!  It is very easy to use and gives your child more freedom for eating times as well as dosing to the tenth of a unit.  You won't regret it! :)

The click is what I'm worried about too. She watched it being done on a pillow, and it didn't phase her. We'll be getting the Animas in a couple weeks, so we'll see how she does when it's on herself???? Very nervous and excited....

My 4 1/2 year old has now been on a pump for 6 months and we have never looked back!  It is great.  Having said that I think its worth being honest and saying it took her a good couple of months to get ok with the new regime of putting the canula in every few days.  The click of the insertion thing used to make her go nuts.  It is definately worth persevering though as it is sooo much easier to manage sick days, chaotic non routine days and general toddler pickiness with food.

My also-almost-4-yr. old was diagnosed last September ('08).   At first I was hesitant about a pump and thought we'd be fine with shots....but now that we've been doing 6-7 a day for a month and her levels have still been crazy, I'm sold on what I've read online--our doc recommends the Animas Ping--it looks fabulous.  I think it's just a matter of us filling out the paperwork, waiting for it to come in (a couple weeks?) and then getting started.  Hoping that's going to happen in the next 4 weeks.  I'll keep you posted!

My 41/2 year old has been on the Minimed Paradigm pump since dec '07. It is seriously my best friend. She doesn't complain about the site changes or anything and the pump is just amazing in my opinion
