I'm wondering how many of you have local support groups for parents of diabetic children.



If you do go to one, what is it like?



What would you look for or like to see in a group?



Our county has a group for diabetics, but I'd like to see one just for parents.

Thank you! I live in a fairly rural area, so I am not even sure how many Type 1 kids are in the area, but I know I'd benefit from meeting them. I'll have to check out the groups you mentioned.

Check with your local JDRF chapter. Ours just started a coffee group that meets once a month in the Portland, OR area. It is nice to have other parents to talk to and share challenges and triumphs with. Also a great way to get and share tips and ideas to make managing type 1 easier.

HI Tamra!



I help facilitate a local support group for parents in our community. We get together once per month just to chat about anything and everything. It's really nice to know other parents & families that are dealing with type 1 everyday like my family is. We have a facebook page if you want to just check it out - we are located in Canada so probably not near you - but just so you can see what we do, etc. For our Facebook Page you can search "Vernon Diabetes Friendship Group".



Also, there is a great type 1 diabetes society in our community as well called POK'D Society (Positive Outlook for Kids with Diabetes). They are there to support local kids and families in their DAILY demands with diabetes - it's great because I think it's been a bit forgotten in amongst all the reserach to cure, etc. - which is extremely important too but the daily demands of diabetes and what our kids go through each day is also important to bring awareness to as well. Anyways, sorry to ramble... :)
