My son was diagnosed at 17.5 months and is now 22 months, just trying to get a handle on everything. Anyone have any suggestions for snacks or recipes for a toddler?

I must say, hats off to you all. I was relativly "lucky" in that my daughter did not come down with type 1 until she was 15...it was already hard enough, I cannot imagine what you all go through every day. That said, I would try greek yoghurt. Chobani is our favorite brand..they even make littler cups in kid friendly flavors and the protein content is relativly high. cheese cubes and fresh fruit? The other thing I would recommend looking into is an insulin pump. I know when we got ours there was a toddler getting one too. It allows of course for many fewer shots and more exact dosing, no more lantus as it gives a constant drip of insulin and it adjusts the rate of this throughout the day as their need for insulin fluctuates all day long. I know I have never been through this with a toddler and a pump also takes some learning...but my daughter is convinced it is the best thing. Good luck! and I think a nutritionist would be a great resource!

Thanks ladies, you are exactly right! We get him to a good spot and then gfor no reason he is all over the place. We have a nutrisionist available and we have him on a strict diet and I count and document all his carbbs. My son is on 3 sliding scales for his insulin, we just recently started to discuss carb to ratio for him but have not moved to that yet. Thanks for the support it's nice to know I am not the only one.

I just want to second what Tamara said. Sometimes it seems like just when everything gets balanced and the numbers are good, something changes to throw everything off again. Just try to remember that you can only do the best you can, and it'll never be perfect. It's supposed to get easier as they get older, because this is such a tricky age. I can't say if that's true or not, because my son is 3 and was diagnosed a year ago. What kind of diet or insulin treatment is your son on? Do you have a nutritionist available for advice on what you can feed your son? My son is carb counting, so I just dose him as he eats, whatever he eats. And one of the easiest snacks I give him is string cheese, because he can have as much as he wants and I don't have to keep track of it. Good luck, I'm right there with you.

Rachel & Traci - it is aggravating to manage our kids' numbers. And it seems to me that just when we get his numbers in check, he grows or gets sick and his numbers are all off, again. I've had to learn that while I am responsible to do my best to help him, his disease will always call the shots. Did your doctor give you instructions on how to handle ketones?

Hi Traci. I'm truly sorry that you've joined our little "club". But if you'll look at the post about the "Scared mum" and scroll down to my post, I've posted a really great source of information regarding snacks. Best of everything. This is a great source of comfort and information!

My grandson was a year old. I think my daughter in law could give you some pointers. I will contact her and as her . I know it is a bit exhausting and very frightening. I will contact her this morning.
