My son was diagnosed with Type 1 Diabetes in late May. He caught his first cold this week and we've noticed his Blood Sugar levels just going crazy and he's in the higher numbers most of the day. How do you guys manage this? It's scarey! Im afraid to give him too much insulin yet I'm afraid he will develop Ketones. Any help, advice, suggestions or comments are Glady appreciated.

Thanks in Advance!

Not sure about the getting easier part but my son just got hospitalized for the first time for DKA last month since he was diagnosed 1-13-04. When they get sick BS goes crazy. My son had a virus and was not able to keep anything at all down and his BS was over 600 he was hospitalized for 3 days and after a couple more days at home he went back to normal and is doing great for now. Good luck and I hope ur child is feeling better.

hiya, my son has been type 1 for 6 years so I know how you feel. It is hard when they are ill but don't panic. Just keep an eye on his blood sugars and check his ketones. If he can't eat and his blood sugars drop try giving him sugary drinks to sip. If his blood sugars are high then his insulin probably will need to be increased. If you haven't been given correction dosages then I'd contact your diabetes nurse just to make sure.

good luck and don't worry, it gets easier

Hi Shannon,

I hope your son is feeling better. The fluids are a great way to help your child be well. Try not to be hesitant about adjusting insulin, though . Insulin is GOOD for him. If he needs more, even temporarily, it's good for him to have more. Your endocrinologist or educator can help you develop a sliding scale for illness, where you have a plan and guidelines for adjusting. Just remember, you are doing great!

wow after 4 years aI bet you've got it down to a science. Did you do much adjusting of her insulin that year she wasn't on the pump? The doctors had us adjust our morning insulin dosage but I'm noticing he's still fluctuating quite a bit. He's generally pretty active so we were keeping his numbers down by his physical activity. Now that's colder he doesnt get out as much to work off those sugars. I'd rather adjust him in other ways besides insulin if possible.. so I will definately try flushing him with liquids and reducing his carbs by a lil bit. He's been skipping his snack times or eating 'free foods' because his numbers have been so high. Just a scary thing going into the unknown with circumstances we've not yet had to experience. Thank you so much for your suggestions and advice. I will for sure follow that route. :D

Hey Shannon,
My daughter Savannah has been diagnosed with IDDM for nearly 4 years, so we have had our fair share of colds and such. Most of the time we are able to tell when she is getting sick because up to 24 hours before symptoms come on her sugars spike for no apparent reason. She has been on the pump for 3 years and that does make it a little easier, but not perfect. First things first, make sure you contact the dr. and let them give you some advice if not peace of mind. Otherwise, keep the fluids coming, as that will flush out any ketones faster and keep him hydrated. We also limit carbs as much as possible so that extra insulin isn't necessary. Good luck and if you have any questions, don't hesitate to ask!
