Problems with 3 yr old on pump

My daughter is three years old, and we started her on the pump a week ago. She was dignosed at 11 months, and we have not had any keytones or hospital visits...until we went on the pump. It happened just the other day, and scared the life out of me. Her A1C has always been normal, and her sugars have always been well under control, but they have been so erratic since we started this pump. I'm trying to be patient, but I don't like her sugars being high and low. I made all of her changes when she was on syringes, but I don't know anything about making changes on this pump, so it's very frustrating for me not to be able to do anything. The doctor just keeps telling me that we have to run basal tests to set her rates, but in order to do the tests, her sugars have to be below 150 for like 9 hours straight! I don't even know that this is possible. I'm just kind of discouraged, and I don't want to take her off the pump, but I also don't want her to feel bad because her sugars are horrible all the time. Are there any other mom's out there that had this problem, and what do I do about it???

Hi, If was the same thing for my son. He went on the pump 2 years ago when he was 8 (he was diagnosed at 4). It took a little while to get the basals figured out, we tested alot also. We also did and are still doing the 2 hour after eating testing. For approx. 2-3 weeks he also had to have 0 carb snacks (veggies, a little bit on cheeze etc..) that way it was easier to check the basals. After that we starting adding and bolusing snacks 1 at a time, for example week 1 we added a morning snack and then the week after we added an afternoon one etc.
I know it can be frustrating to feel like we're starting over and start to second guess ourselves but trust me you'll ace this in no time. Good luck.

Hi Valerie, My son was 3 years old when he went on the pump. It does take awhile to get their rates figured out. The reason is that since they are now always getting insulin there is no peaking time of the insulin like with shots. My son is now 7.5 years old and on his second insulin pump so I have gone through this. It does get easier once the rates get figured out. I do know that when we have had to changed the rates (since kids keep growing and then the rates need to change) we would test 2 hours after eating to determine if the basal rate was correct. Also I would have to do a 3am testing. The best thing to do is just work on getting one basal rate correct with alot of testing and then from there you should be able to hopefully figure out the other rates. Just keep testing her and realize that everything will work out eventually.

All the best,
Kelly
