my son is going into second grade. Each year I have gone into the class to teach them about diabetes and to let them know if they see adam pass out they need to make sure to get a teacher right away. I also read them childrens books about diabetes and then quiz them on it. Do any other parents do this?

one thing that all you you can do is have the diabetic educator come to your childs classroom. they can explain in a age appropraite way about what is going on and will answer any questions. I know that ours did it each year that my son was in grade school. He is now a sophmore in high school. As things change the educator can be a very great well of resources. it helps others not to be afraid of the child in question. Because of a suggestion made by the educator about ny son needing a blood check buddy the entire class wanted to be the one to do it.

i did that when my daughter started elementary school, it was in kinergarten that we started that, i found it usefull as some of the kids were cruel because they were unsure as to what was going on with my daughter...we did have a diabetic counsellor come in from the clinic to teach the kids when my daughter was in the 5th grade and since she had been dealing with diabetes since she was was 4 1/2 years old, they asked me if my daughter would be willing to help them teach the rest of the class about diabetes! she absolutely loved that and it helped the other kids understand and be more understanding to her needs. Now that she is in Middle school i am not sure if they will do that however there are more kids in the school my daughter went to before this year that have diabetes, my daughter was the only one when she went to the elementry school! And as far as i know they have the diabetic counsellor come back to the school to help them as well!

My son is starting Kindy this year. Would love to hear what other moms do. What books do you read? How do you explain it?
