Ok please read and take this very seriously. What I am sharing with you could potentially bring happiness and rest back to your home.

My son is 7months old. Since he was put on formula at about 2wks of age, he has suffered from the following: acid reflux, constipation, fussy during/after feedings, wake up crying during the night several times, constant spit up and choking from it. I had mentioned all this to his pedi but there was never any solutions to his problems. She wanted to prescribe medication or switch him to Soy formula but I refused to go that route. In my opinion, I felt something was causing his grief and I needed to get to the root of the problem since no one in my family suffers from it and well my daughter, now almost 6 years old never had any reflux problems either.

Being the research junkie that I am, I finally came to a conclusion. After switching from Similac Advanced to Similac Sensitive to Similac Alimentum, I finally ran across a website that pointed me in the right direction. It was an article regarding the DHA/ARA that is being used by most formula companies (commercial AND organic) and how parents had been reporting adverse affects. So I decided to shoot them an email and explain everything my son had been experiancing. THEY REPLIED!! And boy did I get the best advice ever. The lady mentioned that the only way I can rule DHA/ARA as the culprit to my son's problems was to try a formula that didn't use Martek's DHA/ARA (which is the DHA/ARA that is found in almost all formulas Similac, Enfimil, Earth's Best Organic etc.)

So I did just that. I looked up the website to the formula they suggested and went and bought it. It is only sold at Whole Foods Market (in Houston, TX) but their website suggests other stores that carry it in your area or you can buy directly through their site.

So let me back up just a bit. Right before I found this website which explained the DHA/ARA stuff, I had caved. My son's acid reflux was getting so bad and he was choking on it which would stop him from breathing for a couple of secs and formula would come through his nose, I caved and got the Prevacid my son's pedi suggested we use. While on his meds he did fine with his formula but he had diarreah which is then what lead me to do more research. SO I bought the formula and wouldn't you know, the change was immediate! My son was no longer spitting up, crying during his bottle, slept through his first night on the formula and has NOT had any episodes since he's been on this Martek DHA/ARA free formula. He's been meds free since his first day on the new formula.

Now the only thing that didn't go away was his constipation, which I now know is due to a milk allergy and not associated with the DHA/ARA stuff. As long as I feed him high fiber foods with his dairy formula he does just fine. So although he still has the potential to be constipated, it is under control by adding the right foods to his diet.

Please feel free to ask me any questions. I shared this info with my friends and I have one other friend whose son has severe GERD, projectille vomiting, and he's been on the formula 2 days now and he's symptom free! My friend can now sleep more than 3 hours a night! She's thrilled and so I know Martek's DHA/ARA is causing this reactions in babies and most mommies don't even know about it.

I hope this advise will bring relief to you as it has for me and my friend. I am not affiliated with anyone and am not marketing or advertising for anyone...I am a parent of two and just want to offer advice to other parents who are sufferign right now.

You mentioned the DHA/ARA in baby foods, is that in all baby food? We just moved from california to NC and are on WIC so we take advantage of receiving the baby food that they provide us however, they do not allow us to get organic baby food here which is no what we are used to. My son always has always previously eaten earths best for 4 months until we moved here and now his acid reflux is out of control.

Yes, I will continue to give him cow's milk after he is off of formula but I will make it a point to buy Organic cow's milk. Nature's One also sells PediaSmart which is like a milk shake that offers all kinds of vitamins and minerals so I plan to give him that as well from time to time.

As for baby food, yes I also have him on organic baby food because when we started him on Solids, he also was having a lot of eczema on his cheeks. It wasn't until I started eliminating some foods and switched to organic that I noticed his cheeks clear up. His cheeks now are 99.9% clear but can get irritated with certain foods (i.e. rice/oatmeal cereals). I have him on Earth's Best Organic baby foods but I stay away from Earth's Best formula because even though they say they are organic, they are using Martek's DHA/ARA in their formula which is breaking organic rules. I stay away from baby food that say's DHA/ARA in it also and I don't even bother with the Gerber Organics...

BTW, You should notice a difference with the new formula immediately. If you decide to continue to use that formula, you can request a scoop for free from their website and keep the barcodes from the cans. Once you've bought 24, you can mail them in for a rebate and get 2 free cans.

GOOD LUCK!

http://www.naturesone.com/ - this is the infant formula I am now using which contains DHA/ARA but through a different source other than Martek's way of producing.

"The makers of infant formulas like Lipil and Good Start are quick to say they do. In fact, they claim that formula is now more like breastmilk than ever before. Nevertheless, ongoing research fails to show a significant beneficial effect. In early documents marketing their DHASCO and ARASCO to the formula companies, they claimed that even if these additives didn't make a difference, they could be "widely incorporated into infant formulas, as a marketing tool...." Quoting Rachel:

I just finished reading your story with some hope, if u dont mind what formula are feeding ur son because i read you used alimentum and that is the same formula my son is currently on and it all comes back up to the point that i took him to his ped he lost 8 oz im desprite at this point he is also on meds as well...they reffered me to a specialist but what gets me mad is that it took him my to lose weight when i kept insisting he is not gaining weight he is jus maintaining.

Rachel,

I am sorry to hear that you too are experiencing the same problems. It certainly breaks your heart to see your baby in so much pain and all the doctor's  can say is "it's common for babies to have this they will outgrow it"!!! Bull..it is not common and if babies do experiance these issues it's because something is causing it and the doctor's don't want to do the dirty work of trying to figure out what is the root of the problem. Besides..how else would they take their trip to the bahamas if they don't prescribe their daily Prevacid to every kid who has "acid reflux".

The formula I am using is called Nature's One Baby's Only Organic Dairy Formula (http://www.naturesone.com/). It is marketed as a toddler formula but it is because they promote breastfeeding for the first 12 months of life but their formula is compareable to the other formulas on the market. They even provide a comparison chart on their website. Your baby will get the DHA/ARA benefits by using this formula but they obtain theirs through egg yolks. You can read more about them on their website.

If you can't locate this formula in any stores near your home (go to store locator on their front page), you can request samples to be sent to you and it usually only takes a week to receive them (I made 3 requests and had samples sent to my home, then had them send some to my mom and mother-in-law using thier names and addresses). In the meantime, I would suggest you go to any grocer (Walmart, Target, Kroger etc) and see if you can find a formula that does not advertise DHA/ARA by Martek on their brand.

The only way you can rule Martek's DHA/ARA as the culprit, is to try a formula that does not have it. Nature's One doesn't have it and the only reason I don't use a brand that simply just doesn't have DHA/ARA is because I still want to offer my son the DHA/ARA benefits but through a natural source and not through chemically engineered Algae and Fungus.

Please let me know how it goes. I really hope this advice will bring peace to your home. Below are some links to readings you may be interested in.
