daughter almost ready for graduate school..how to pay for it is another story. Encouraging her to look for scholarships..cost for her specialty area very expensive ..wondering what alternative funding source to research?

My sister graduated last year with her masters and when we were searching for ways to help pay for college she said go to the book to store. There is a book on all the resources for helping fund college, and she didn't buy the book either she sat down i wrote down the information and then started applying for everything. I hope this helps.

I think it is best to let her figure it out herself and move on with your life. It seems like for my grandparents parenting ended at 18, my parents when they dropped us off at the dorm freshmen year and for our generation it NEVER ends. Do you think its because every time they have a question we are so easy to reach? Where "in our day" even if you did want to talk with your mom good luck trying to reach her and by the time you did you had already answered the question. just a thought.

Try finding employment in her field and see about company sponsored educational assistance. My daughter will be going to graduate school in the fall of 2010, I have been paying all her bills and can no longer afford it.

Hi,
We have four children who have graduated from college (woo-hoo). Our deal from the start was "we'll help you with expenses during your first 4 years of undergrad. After that you are on our own." Our youngest, who attended a state university, has moved back in with us to do her post-graduate work. All education expenses are hers ( and are funded through loans). We still pay for her cell phone (family plan) and car expenses (insurance, gas, repairs) and she is not charged room and board. It seems to be working out (although she is itching to move out on her own).

My dd is considering Grad school too. She is financially on her own and has always been.
I hate this but I am extremely proud of her for it. Her entire education has been funded by grants and loans. She has cerebral palsy but never asked or "qualified" for any disability benefits though she very well deserves thus.
I have always encouraged my girl that she can be or do whatever she likes. And I believe she feels this is so. She makes excellent grades and I believe she will bowl me over when she begins her career in who-knows how many years... ;)

Patricia,
Our oldest just started grad school in August. She went out of state. The university gave her a scholarship which put her at the in-state level of tuition. She also took out a low interest federal student loan. She had gotten through undergrad without any debt so that was her first loan. I think many grad schools have assistance in scholarship form or other financial aid. Wondering if she will be considered independent from you? on a tax-basis? Our daughter was as she had also waited one year after college graduation and worked before entering grad school. There are also a few search engines for scholarships and grants where you plug in the student's profile and they match up scholarships. One is called FastWeb, i'm sure there are more. It is not an easy thing but I think once you start researching you will find some avenues. Also need to ask the school she is accepted to about it, they may be able to help or her current undergrad school may have some ideas for her. Sure there is help if you keep asking. Best to you. I can understand.
Laurie,
Mom of one grad student, 2 college students

I am wondering the same thing, my daughter graduates this year and wants to become a lawyer. We are searching areas, but all don't seem to be getting any where. Good luck with your search.
