I was not looking forward to my son leaving for the military (Navy). He has been my friend, my pal..my reason. He left on Tuesday and I am extremely lost and empty without him. Will this pain ever get better?

I am looking forward to an empty nest but I am also preparing myself financially to be more available for our future grandchildren. I hope that is a long ways off. LOL.
My husband and I are preparing for this by owning our home business through ACN. It is awesome!

I am so glad to hear other moms out there that feel the same way as I do! I enjoy having my sons, 19 and 22, home but I enjoy the time with my husband too. They need to get out and experience things on their own. The house will stay much cleaner and my grocery bill will be a lot less!

I know, my oldest daughter is in her 2nd yr. of college at JSU (Pre-law) and she received a heap of scholarship money, more than what she received last year. I mean alot more.I miss her, NOT, Lol and 1 more year with my 17 yr old. Off to med school she go. I love the world of them, but it's time for some ME time and for them to get to know the world, still with some encouraging advice and guidance from mom.

My husband and I love our kids and would do anything for them. So it seems mean but we are are very excited to see them all off to school. They are each showing their independence and that has been a struggle at times.

Thanks Melanie! I was so excited when all three were finally in elementary school that I actually giggled at different points during the day. It has been interesting to read the different feelings expressed about having an empty nest. Thanks to all who have replied to my conversation started. Keep them coming!

This is to Linda B. I think if your husband wants to be at home. then let him do that. You are doing the right thing, going out with friends. Find things that interest you and maybe your husband will want to join in too.

Well, I'm just ahead of you! I have a 27, 25, 23, and 20 year old. The oldest two are married. The 3rd graduated from university in Glasgow, UK last year and lives in LosAngeles, and the 4th is a junior at Indiana University in Bloomington, IN. One on each coast, and the only one that can come home with any consistency is the college student. So, I continue to teach to help get her through school (headed to med school), but it sure gets lonely at home without them. Hubby and I are often in bed far too early, and enjoy the company of our two retrievers far too much. I miss my children tremendously. Thank goodness for todays technology! Teen years can be tough, but consider life without them around........

ha! I too have a 21, 19 and 17 year old but not all at home still. One left....missed her so much the first week she was working at a week long camp that when she came home I forgot to pick her up...she didn't think it was quite as funny as I did...looking forward to a '2nd honeymoon' with my husband/their dad

I'm the mother of 5 I have been raising kids for 29 years. sept.1rst they will be gone. the last one goes off to college. I am looking forward to getting to know my husband again and spending quality alone time with him.

our Daughters are 21 and 25. This is the first summer that one of the girls has not spent most of it at "home". taking down the pictures on our youngest' bedroom this summer so we could but a queen sized bed ii into make it more of a guest room was different. The reasons for doing now are for another day. Anyway although I miss the family time, I do know that our daughters are where God wants them to be in this season of their lives. As a parents that have raised our daughters to strive for God's Will for their lives we feel very blessed to have our daughters where they are.

I so understand what you are saying, i have a 20 year old that moved out... different state, a 17 year old who will graduate this year, and a16 year old who is just like his dad, home potato lol on the computer all day. i do everything with and for my kids i will be so lost.....

My husband and are VERY ready. I haven't seen too much here but for us having our 21 year old come back home (Which pushed the 20 year old out the door, they don't get along under the same roof) and still trying to keep our 16 year old sane has put tremendous pressure on our marriage....our 21 year old thinks the world owes him...sooo frustrating.

I really suffered when my son first went to uni.....everytime i walk passed his bedroom i would burst into tears....It has got easier, but still im getting worried as the Summer is nearing the end and September looms!! I have a 22 year old daughter that is still at home, so i guess that helps me. I can understand why some parents would look forward to having an empty nest.......the arguments between my 2 kids drive me crazy, and the House is so much calmer when he's away....but sometimes it just reminds me that the years are going by too quickly!!!

I am so not looking forward to the empty nest. My husband is a stay at home at won't do anything so I do everything with my friends and kids. This summer has been a test because they are both away from home working and I have survived so far.Really Really miss them.

I am looking forward to it. Many people tell me....oh you'll be so lost. I really don't feel that way at all...I'm excited for a new chapter in ALL of our lives. I have twins that will be freshman in college this year

you're so right. I love when my daughter comes home for the summer but am sooooo glad to see her go back. She worked full time for the 1st time this summer so it was a little easier but I'm getting tired of picking up after her! My son has even commented on what a mess she is!
My son starts college this fall so it will truely be an empty nest. My husband and I are looking forward to some quiet alone time. We'll be taking a trip to the lake for a couple of days in Sept. Can't wait!

You're not alone! Mine are 24 and 21, both still living at home, working but still at home. But they both know it's just too expensive to live on their own. This wonderful economy and the continued threat of being layed off isn't helping.

My boys are 14 & 17 (in high school & college). The 17yr old will be staying home.
I'm having trouble with the empty nest. I too will miss the calls/friends/noise.
Maybe in a few years I'll feel differently.

Is there something wrong with me, I have an empty nest and I miss my three girls, and the banter, there friends calling, getting ready to go out, ok I do have a tidy house, the washing machine and dryer will probably last longer, but still I miss them.

I am so with you ! My two oldest ones are out....23, 21. I have a 17 yr old daughter that is graduating next year (Yes) and a 16 yr old step son who know's everything don't you know.............Counting down...............(I love them also just ready for them to go)

This year I will have empy nest. My only daughter is off to college. I'm just glad I have a job working in the school system with 4 year olds to keep me busy during the day. I just hope things go well.

My husband and I are VERY much ready for the NEW SEASON of our EMPTY NEST!! My Kids are 21,our oldest son and just graduated from Army Basic, 19 yr old daughter, thinks she knows what she wants in life but cant put her finger on it..she is in community college living @ home and our baby..is 16 next month, incoming Sophomore and JV football player.......we long for the day that we aren't "on notice" for random people in the house. We can relax and know we can leave the house and it will be the same as we left it! Seasons of life is the key...I believe......soon!

I know several moms who felt guilty about looking forward to their empty nest. I never understood that!! The reality is that as a woman you have a right to move on with your life. I love when my kids come home for the summer, but I love being independent again and having a clean space to call home!

Yes! I, too, love my kids, but my 20 year old is not a social butterfly and plants his butt in front of the computer for hours on end! He did try to find a job this summer but jobs are pretty scarce around us right now.. couple more weeks and he heads back. It also puts a strain on our budget to feed the "hollow leg"!

I am so looking forward to my children to move out. I have a 15 almost 16 year old, 17 almost 18 year old and a 24 year old. My oldest is out and in college. My son is going to stay home the first year of college and attend a local community college. My husband and are both looking forward to the empty nest. ahh a clean house again.
