I am getting worried reading everyone's stories. My 4 month old had a 25 minute seizure before the paramedics got it to stop. I have not been able to find anything or anyone that has also had this happen. We spent 5 days in ICU, leaving with what they said was an eptilogenic focus, put on phenobarb, and sent to a specialist. The specialist switched him off phenobarb to keppra, but still no answers until our next appt.(hopefully). He is so happy and doing eveything he is supposed to be doing, but it does not calm my fears. Has anyone else started this way? What next?

my son had seizures when he was a baby until he turned 5, he is now 6, they would sometimes go for 20 minutes and would lose all of his colour and his would be blue. I would have to give him diazapam but it it still happened. He has sinced been diagnose dwith autism, I personally feel his lack of oxygen whislt having seizures affected his brain as my other son who also had seizures when he was young is also delayed in many areas.

My daughter had a seizure in her sleep when she was 4 and a half and took paramedics 35 minutes to bring her out of it and she had to spend a night in hospital under observation and since this she has suffered small seizures in her sleep an also atypical absences during day so u are not alone

My son was almost 7 months old when he had his first seizure. It lasted about 45 minutes. His third seizure lasted almost 35 minutes. He's had several that lasted 15 minutes or so. Our neurologist did give us Diastat (and we don't leave home without it), but even with that his seizures have still be lengthy. He's been on many medications, including Keppra but it made his seizures worse. Developmentally, he hit all milestones when he was supposed to until about 2.5. He's almost 5 now and is a little behind his peers. He's still on medicine (Topamax and Depakote). We've never found any reason for his seizures or any abnormalities so we still don't have answers. At first, we were told they were febrile, but then he'd have them without fever. Still, the only time he really has them is if he's sick or about to get sick. He's gone long stretches without them (9 months, 14 months). Right now he's gone 5 months. Make sure that your doctor listens to you and works with you. We ended up switching doctors after much discouragement and are much happier now. Good luck!

My son's 1st seizure was 3 hrs long. terrifying. that was when he was 17 mths and he's 6 now. He is very well controlled on Keppra and Topamax. When he intitally had breakthroughs, they were 45-60 mins to get them under control. Now they're much shorter. I can't say that my fears have ever really been calmed, but that they've just become a part of who I am, like a heightened awareness of every little thing out of the ordinary. What next? that's a hard one. My son is special needs- we've never really gotten a diagnosis. Right now, it's a mater of finding the right meds and getting the seizures under control. Then the fact finding tests start, trying to figure out why and where they're coming from. Did your Dr give you Diastat? We've been around the block w seizures, feel free to ask questions. I'll do my best to answer them. Oh, FYI- one of the side effects of Keppra is mood swings. Our neuro prescribed B6, 100mg 2x/day to help even his moods out, and it worked great! Talk to your neuro about it.
