Constance,
My God, I hope you have oxygen at home for this. My little guy also stops breathing during seizures and his O2 saturations have dropped pretty low. We now have an oxygen concentrator in the house and it makes a huge difference. I know that scarey feeling when your child turns gray and their lips are blue and you feel so helpless. Ask to get oxygen in the house, it could save your childs' life!

My son had another febrile seizure a couple weeks ago. We thought he had grwon out of them. He will be six in a few months. He stopped breathing, and turned blue. I was very concerned, and after reseaching online...felt a little better. I guess some kids stop breathing because their chest muscles freeze up and they turn blue because the blood at the skins surface rushes to the major organs..very scary!! Now he has to have more tests done..eeg said he has abnormal sleep patterns???

It would help a lot to many worried parents if in your comments you describe how many seconds your child "stop" breathing, stop breathing for 10 seconds is not extreme, it may seem like an eternity but it is not, children drop the oxygen saturation in blood faster than adults, but only if you have a pulse oximetry machine (30 dollars ) you will know definitely how severe is his period of anoxia, stop writing " stop breathing", better write " stop breathing for 26 seconds and his pulse oximetry drop to 85%", this much information will help the parents cam down their anxiety and will help the doctor find out an answer.

My son had his first febrile seizure last Dec when he had the flu. At first, I thought he was having a really bad asthma attack (he's had a nebulizer since he was one). He turned gray and limp and we called 911. Paramedics said it was probably a febrile seizure; pediatrician agreed. Second seizure in March with just a head cold and no decernable fever. Saw a neurologist who just said probably febrile seizure, didn't seem too concerned, gave me basic info. Third and by far worst seizure in June. Totally blue this time. His lips were navy colored and he was gurgling and frothing at the mouth. Horrible sight to see. Makes me cry even now. He just turned three. So afraid that he is going to have more and they going to be bad.

My 15 year old stops breathing during grand mal seizures. I can think of nothing worse than my child gray in my arms and being completely helpless. The first time I screamed and lost my voice for a week. I see visions of my daughter gray and dead while I am awake and this morning I woke up to a nightmare of my daughter's gray face. We have Keppra now. We have been 6 weeks with our a seizure. My life will never be the same.

Our son (now 7 years old) had his first febrile seizure when he was 2 1/2, and his second at 3 1/2 years old almost one year apart to the date. He had a fever spike and started seizing while asleep next to me in our bed. After the seizing stopped, he too turned completely blue and was stiff. I did rescue breathing on him both times and he eventually came to... Scariest feeling in the world!!! He has had no more seizures since (that we know of anyway). Both were brought on by an underlying cause (ear infection, virus...), a high temp spike and then started to seize while sleeping shortly after falling asleep. We had many tests ran on him including 2 EEGs which showed epileptic spikes while asleep. He was diagnosed as epileptic, however, later the doctor stated she can't say this 100%. Still a lot of unanswered questions, sleepless nights.... I now keep plenty of Childrens Motrin on hand and give to him at the first sign of sickness. Good luck to you, I can relate completely to the questions and frustration this causes. Prayers and hugs to you and your family.

Hi, my six months old daughter is on keppra and for three weeks she did not have a single episode until today. She experienced two since this morning. All of her test, EEG and Cat scan gave back normal and negative. Will my baby grow out of this? I am scared. :(

My 19 mo old son also stops breathing and I dont know how to help anymore. The drs call my sons case unusual. All of his eegs Have come back normal (including 24 and 72), his mri is normal, yet, he comtinues to have these seizures. He is now on keppra and it has jhelped tremendously- he started developing and the seizures dtopped for the most part. Has anyone else experienced something similar? I am frustrated that theyre not catching them and i know the socs r thinking that we r crazy...

Angel, we had to get his specialist to prescribe one to our son. They don't typically do this, or so I've been told, it depends on how frequent the seizures are and duration of seizures (could be different with different doctors though). I would ask your epileptologist if you have one or your neurologist and see what they think. CPR training was alo done through my sons hospital when the prescribed the oxygen to have as an option in case things took a turn for the worst.

If i have a seizure that evolves into a tonic-clonic seizure, most times my lungs shut down for a minute. I think it's a natural defense mechanism. At first it seems like i do nothing but inhale, even after my lungs are full. Kinda like a violent gasping sound, until the lungs get so full that the brain shuts down the fuction of the lungs. After not breathing for a minute, and while the body is exerting itself simultaneously, during the seizure, oxygen is deprived from the brain,& consciousness is lost. Yea,it's scary.

My 10 year old daughter has stopped breathing during seizures. The first time she had one, I found her in her bed turning blue and convulsing. Its extremely frightening. The doctor at the emergency room recommended that her father and I take CPR/First Aid classes in our area.

Yeah no matter how you look at it they are scary. I know about three years ago I had massive seizure while my husband was at work . My kids were the only one's there and they did a great job. I was told my daughter called 911 on the house phone and my son called my husband on my cell phone. They said I was out for about 30 minutes before I came to. I realy don't know case the next 72 hours are a complete blank for me.

Well my son is 4 yrs old and has had 3 seizures. Two that happened at his daycare and one at home. I was so scared. He was seizing and foaming at the mouth. He didn't seem to be breathing well to me, but 911 told me if he is making any kind of sounds that he is getting air in. He was just making wining sounds and not really coming to. I was told it's febrile seizures, which is supposed to be common. They can happen out of nowhere. Seizures are scary.

She was born with a rare birth defect CCA it effects so many things. Her bones, muscles, tendons, heart, lungs, immune system. When she started having seizures I was just like what more can happen. Now I am kicking myself becaue more has happened and now I am waiting untill next week to find out if the Nuerosurgeon has to perform surgery or not. Completely on edge.
