My son took his first febrile seizure at 18 months and continued to have them everytime he got any time of fever.which happened alot ..didnt have to be high...he was on meds (depakote) for one year (no seizures on med) and was then seizure free for 3 years (no meds) I thought i was out of the woods... and then in the summer of 07 (he was about to turn 7 yrs) he had a low fever and took a seizure diagnosed with a seizure disorder. Had an 24 hr overnight video EEG and was told there was seizure activity...and he was put on lamictal...and has been seizure free for one year on meds...A couple of my husbands family members also have had febrile seizure..my daughter had one febrile seizure at almost 1yr old..she is now 5 and hasnt had another (knock on wood) .My brother in law had abdominal epilepsy as a child and now has absense epilepsy (zoning out).as a teen...I am just hoping it doesnt keep progressing into different forms....that is why i choose to keep him on the meds...I sympathize with you all...it def. is the scariest thing any parent should have to witness....I was also told that most children do not have febrile seizures after the age of 5.

My daughter's almost 3 and she had her first seizure 2 months ago. They're calling it an atypical febrile seizure as it last about 30 minutes and she only had a slight temperature of about 100.5 degrees. They also think that she's been having mini seizures in her sleep and when she "zones out" sometimes. This has been the most terrifying thing I've ever been through in my life. The ambulance came for her and my 5 year old son witnessed the whole thing too. Very scary!! Has anyone else been through something as strange as this?

Quoting Julianne:

My son just had his first one last night. He will be 1 on Sunday. Since our oldest child (daughter, 10) has epilepsy, it scared us quite a bit to see our littlest convulsing for 10 minutes during dinner then throwing up. It was a febrile seizure, though, so the doc is just documenting it and we need to watch him. He's fine today, except for the fever.

very scary!. when my youngest had a febrile seizure, i almost collapsed emotionally. i instantly invisioned the hospitals and test and difficulties my oldest goes through. it took a solid pediatrician to assure me that i wasn't on a road to repeat.

hi my name is natalie and our son has had 2 FC the last of which was on christmas day we have been told about 3 in 100 children have a febrile seizure sometime before their 6th birthday. They most commonly occur between the ages of 18 months and three years. They are rare in children under six months and over the age of six years.

Some parents wonder that if a child has a febrile seizure whether it can lead on to developing epilepsy. About 2 in 100 children who have a febrile seizure develop epilepsy in later childhood. This is very slightly higher than the chance of epilepsy developing in children who have not had a febrile seizure. But this is probably because a small number of children are prone to develop both epilepsy and febrile seizures. So, having a febrile seizure does not cause epilepsy to develop.

One study which followed up children who had had a febrile seizure found that “children who had febrile seizures did at least as well as, if not better than, children without febrile seizures on measures of intelligence, academic achievement, behaviour, and working memory”.so there is one positive we all have genius's on our hands !!

Hi, I'm a nurse who specialised in Paediatric (childrens' ) nursing for 5yrs prior to moving on to other areas & being a FT mum. Around 20% of kids have febrile convulsions but I don't know that there is a set age at which they stop; once their temperature regulation mechanism is mature, they will no longer happen - each child is different but I don't remember children of school age having them. All the best! It is scary! My daughter has seizures but they are not febrile or epilepsy - hopefully she'll grow out of them!
