Have you ever researched Alternative Treatments for Controlling Seizures?

[deleted account] ( 12 moms have responded )

When Aidan was 2 1/2 years old he his first Febrile Seizure, we hope that is was a one time occurrence, but unfortunately that wasn't the case, about a week later he had another. He started off having Grand Mal Seizure only while sleeping, they were very rare and we were able to keep him controlled off medication. We considered ourselves lucky.
When he was 3 1/2 he had his first grouping of daytime Seizures, we started him on medication immediately. He developed two other types of Seizure within weeks of his first daytime seizures. Before we knew it he was having four different types of Seizures all day long. They became debilitating to him and he lost his speech and what little motor function he did have. We counted about 30+ seizures per day and that didn't count the "frozen seizures" that we didn't catch. His Neurologist said with the increased activity he was having in his brain he could have been having numerous unseen seizures. We had tried numerous medications with no success. I started to research different options for controlling Aidan's Seizures. I found a couple of Alternative Treatments that when they were applied together they made drastic differences in Aidan's seizure activities. Within weeks his seizure activity had drastically changed! All of the Day time Seizure stopped and we haven't seen them since!! Now a few years later he is very well controlled! He has about a handful of Grand Mal seizures a year and they are only when he is sleeping. Have you guys ever looked at Alternative Treatments in your Community?

Hi Candi,
We used a combination of Ayurvedic Medicine which is an east Indian Traditional Medicine, we work with a Practitioner who studied extensively in India and is a huge part of the Ayurvedic Community. He has written numerous books and tours world wide teaching Ayurveda. His name is Dr. Vasant Lad. We worked with Dr. Lad and a Physician friend of mine who had studied Ayurveda under Dr. Lad. Aidan was put on a diet to help balance his system, we implemented a very specific schedule for him (ie:he would eat at the same time everyday and he went to bed at the same time everyday, also he has an earlier bedtime), an herbal supplement twice a day, we also put herbal oil on the bottom of his feet before he went to sleep. The diet was a big changes for us, but really it was pretty easy, it was just a matter of emptying that pantry and only filling it with things Aidan could eat. Surprisingly this was actually easier than all of the seizure medications. We used the Ayurvedic Principals with Energy Work. There are many different kinds of Energy Work out there, so you would have to talk with Energy Practitioners to see if they have worked with children who have seizure activity and find one you feel comfortable working with. When we combined the two Modalities together, it was amazing!! Ayurveda is a very old traditional medicine that focuses on changing the body as a whole to create balance...it is a process that takes time, but is well worth it! The Ayurvedic Practitioners said it would take 3-6 months to see results from the daily regiments they recommended. Energy Work focuses on bring the body, mind, etc. into balance, they say to set and intention, but be "open to outcome", so in other words, you can't put a time limit on it or expect it to have specific results. But we has used Energy Work before with Aidan to help with his CP, so we personally had some background with it and knew it had benefited him in the past which made it worth giving it a try with his Seizures. When we combined Energy Work with Ayurveda it was like we found the combination for Aidan! Within three days he was pulling his knees underneath him and rolling over!! We hadn't seen him do that is what seemed like an eternity!! Within weeks he was making so much progress it was almost to much to believe! As of today he has regained all of his function plus more and his speech has recovered. The only difference I notice with him is to me he doesn't articulate his words as much as he did when he was a small child, but no one by me notices that!

It changed our lives, it gave Aidan his life back! It was well worth it for us and I just wanted to get the word out there for other parents. I am not saying it is the fix all for everyone, but it sure helped us when nothing else was working. Aidan had combined so many different types of Medications with no results, many of those meds were at Adult doses and still couldn't even touch his Seizure activity. He wasn't a candidate for surgery, so his Neurologist said that all we can do is continue experimenting with different Medications until we found the ones that worked. They told us that his may never stop his Seizures and I couldn't stand by and watch Aidan disappear behind a haze of Seizure activity. He was Seizing all day long! I knew there had to be something! So we were so happy to find something out there that was an alternative to the medications. I just hope that if there are other children who like Aidan do better without Medication they have the opportunity to know that there are other options to try.

Dear Tessa,

Could you please tell me about the "alternative treatments" mentioned?

Our son is now 2,5yrs old and his first seizure was also a fever cramp when he was 10 month old.

We have been very lucky until this summer with keeping the seizures somewhat controlled and his development is fine. Now unfortunately during the summer he has worsened a lot! The additional medication doesn't work at all and even seem to make him worse. I would love to know further about this alternative treatment if you have time. How is your son now?

Thank you very much in advance

Also, a friend (physician and Ph.D.) recommended Neurofeedback and said she has seen incredible results in lessening and stopping seizures with NF alone. You can find more information at http://eeginfo.com.

Thanks for the tips on the chiropractic, as well! Our son is 14 and just began having tonic-clonic seizures (4 seizures over the last year). 3 years ago they diagnosed him as having migraines, but now it appears it was the beginnings of a seizure disorder. We're still in the process of trying to determine what created the onset, but once we do I definitely want to keep things as natural as possible.

Thanks to everyone that's sharing!

Have any of you heard about the GAPS diet? Its Gut & Psycology Syndrome. A parent in our parent support group started it w/ her son who is 1 1/2. He has seizures and infantile spasms. They are going on 8 month of no seizures and no medicine. Its developed by dr in Britan. I just ordered the book on Sunday. Its basically just a super healthy diet rich in oils, no processed food allowed. I heard it tough, but I'm willing to try. My son has Drop Attach seizures and have been on Trileptal, Keppra, Lamictal and now Topamax. My son also has CP. He just turned 3 in June. This diet doesn't claim to help seizures, but that mom said she wanted to find alternative medicine and found a dr in TX that recommended it.

My soon has been been going to a Nucca Chiropractor which is completely different from traditional chiropractic and works 10x better.
http://www.ucc-ny.com/conditions-treated... Please look into this if you are leaning towards chiropractic. Traditional chiropractic can cause more harm then good. I should know they screwed up my back pretty bad. Now i too am going to Nucca and have seen more results in 2 months and my sons seizures have been more controlled. We are hoping that he will go seizure free long enough for us to take him off the medicine and control his seizures with just the Nucca care. We also use essential oils from young living and magnetic therapy. Which have helped as well.

Cathy,
That is wonderful to hear! I am glad to know that there are other people out there who have tried alternatives and had success! We were so happy with the treatments and it changed our sons life! We wanted everyone else out there to know that there are options. Not to discredit tradition medicine! We use a combination of Natural Therapies and Traditional Medicine for our son and it has been life changing!

We've tried fish oil, which might have decreased our daughter's seizures, but regardless is good for your brain. We also have had very good luck with Jin Shin Jyutsu, which is a Japanese energy healing technique, where the practitioner "balances the pulses" of the patient. Sounds crazy and I was a big skeptic, but we've noticed definite benefits after several of our visits. The person we found is awesome and only charges $30 since our daughter is 6. We've also tried some Qi Gong, Chinese energy healing, and noticed improvements. We don't do that anymore because the appointments are 2 hours and our daughter isn't as willing to hang around for that long anymore. We believe in a combination of traditional and alternative medicine and it seems to be working.

Thank you for sharing. I will check out the Chiropractic work as well. My son still on rare occasions have Grand Ma seizures. Using Ayurveda and Energy Work, we were able to completely eliminate the other three types of seizures he was having...we have seen no evidence of them in almost three years!! YEA!! But every so often he will have a Grand Mal, So far this year he has had two clusters, which is still a tremendous improvement from three years ago, when he was having them every few days. But as a parent I would love to see Aidan seizure free as would any parent who has a child helplessly seizing. I will look into chiropractic, thanks you so much for taking the time to share!!

Thanks for sharing what you have found totally makes sense. I've noticed that regular chiropractic has helped immensely with my daughter also.

My daughter is 6 and 1/2. She has suffered from seizures since she was born.We have gone threw just about every combination of medicines out there with very little long term control. We tried the Atkins diet which had some short term control for her and then we went to the Ketogenic diet. We had about six months of success before she started seizing again. The high fat content and almost no carbs gives the body the sense of starvation which causes it to create more keytones in the brain. High keytone counts help control many types of seizures. You really need to work with a nutritionist to make sure you have a healthy balance and understand the fat to carb ratio that works for your childs height and weight. It is a difficult diet for many children to stomach because of the high fat content. Fortunately my daughter has her fathers stomach and it wasn't a problem for her. Unfortunately like all of the meds so far, we only had six months of limited control. The pay off versus the necessary preperation and monitoring of diet just wasn't worth it for us. You may want to start with an Atkins (working with a nutritionist) and see if you have any success with that first.
