i hope someone can help me. My 3 year old started hallucinating about 2 months ago. The first time it happened he was kept in hospital over night. this was because he had fallen that day and banged his head. He was screaming he could see smoke, bees, spiders etc. On observation they agreed it wasnt from banging his head but to take him home and basically hope it was a once off. But a few days later we were in jewellery shop and he started screaming again that he could see a spider and that he could see my hair all over the ground. This happened every few days and he got an urgent referel to a consultant. It stopped happening as much the last 2 weeks and he saw the consultant on friday. She said they are going to refer him for an EEG but that it would be a 9 week wait. Then she said he could have a growth in his brain but try not to worry!! Obviously im terrified now whats wrong with my son! She said she doesnt want to expose him to the radiation of a brain scan unless she feels necessary. How am i meant to wait 9 weeks after her scaring me and saying he could have a growth in his brain! I said to her surely if it was something serious like that surely hed have other symptoms and she said no some kids dont :( Im terrified now that my child could have a brain tumour or somethibg serious. Doesnt help that i google everything. I dont know if anyone can help me or has experienced this. Id be most grateful with any responses

Why is it taking so long for the EEG? They can be done in an ER

That i what i would do because you can go to as many doctors as you want. You are your childs voice and you know them better than the doctors. The doctors know the medical side that is it. Go with your gut and heart. Good luck. My prayers are with you.

how do i get a second opinion? Do i ask the doctor to refer me to a different consultant? I dont like undermining the consultant that I have seen but I dont know her. Theres another consultant who the child used to see when he was a baby and id rather see him or at least see does he have the same opinion or not. I was thinking il ring his secetary tomorrow and see does he take private patients and could I pay to see him. I'l also go to my doctor aswell and tell him the situation and see what he thinks. Thats all I can really do now :(

Hi, I was speaking to the consultant yesterday. I explained the strange blinking thing he done at the weekend and she still doesnt think he needs a CT scan. I asked her about an MRI because it doesnt use radiation and she said theres a 9 month wait for an MRI scan for a child!!!! I told her that she had really worried me when she said that it could be a growth in his brain. But she just said she thinks i should just wait and see what happens. She said strange things like this do happen kids with no explanation and they can just go away.
Shes booked him in for an EEG but theres a 9-10 week wait. The only other thing i can do for him is if i want i can go private for the EEG and pay £300 for it and he'll get it in 2-3 weeks.
I dont know what to do, I dont know if I should wait and hope it stops happening and take comfort in the fact that the consultant isnt too concerned. Or if i should pay the £300 to see if it gives me any answers?? :/

GET THE MRI ASAP. It will calm the nerves. My oldest who is now eleven has had three at least and now this summer my two year old will have one the radiation is not that bad and depending how old he is they may have to be put to sleep so they don't move and have to do it again.

Try having his eyes checked as well by a Pediatric Opthomologist. He could be seeing "floaters". They will put drops in his eyes to dialate them and check for things such as retinal problems like detachments. Floaters are like squigley things in your line of sight. That may be why he was looking up and blinking the way he was and not able to describe what he was seeing. I worked for an Opthomologist for 3 years and saw alot of these types of things. It's worth a visit to ease you mind and that's one less thing you'd need to worry about. I hope everything works out for you and your son.

Thanks for replying to me. I think I just had convinced myself that it most likely wasnt something serious because he has no other symptoms and then when she said he didnt need to have other symptoms it freaked me out.
I dont give him attention when it happens, you can tell he doesnt want it to happen. When it first happened he was terrified, its left him totally scared of flies and spiders. Sometimes its just random comments like 'mummy theres smoke going up my nose.' Yesterday he was sitting beside me on the sofa and I looked at him and he was staring up to the top left and blinking really fast. When I asked him what was wrong he said something with his eye but he didnt seem able to explain what it is.
I know google doesnt help and thats why i decided to look for forums instead. I totally believe this is really happening and it isnt just his imagination. Especially what happened to him yesterday. The consultant said if anything happens again to ring her secetary and theyd consider a CT scan. But then she goes on about how its alot of radiation to put into a child and they dont like doing it unless they feel 100% necessary. I was wondering if an MRI would show anything instead of exposing him to the radiation of a CT scan. Im going to phone her and see if theres any way to get the EEG faster.
I just dont know how to feel atm with whats happening him, I dont know anyone whos went through this :(

I think you have worked yourself into a frenzie. Stop and be rational, how do you react when your son is screaming that he can see things. If you react with concern and fear he may be aware that this gets your reaction and fast. Do not worry to much this is more common than you think. Try not to react at all when he does this again. Try your best to totally ignore it. Get the tests done but dont worry yourself to death over this. If your doctor really thought that your son had a growth in his brain there is no way he would allow you to wait 9 weeks for a test as that is negligence. You would of been seen and scanned the same day. Take comfort in that.
