for all the parents that have children that have epilepsy how did they determine that your child have epilepsy? Did they run test first before they ever gave them that first dose of epileptic medicine or did they treat then test please need some answers here.. thanks

Hi,
My daughter was 13 when she had her first seizure and they did a few tests like catscans and treated. She had an EEG probably 3 to 4 months after they diagnosed her.

my son had his first siezure at 10.5months, at first they thought febrile convultions, but 6wks later 4 visits to hospital, 16 more siezures, a tone of tests they diagnosed him with epilepsy. he started medication, he is now 7, his last siezure was 24 dec 2009, he has been medication free since may 2012... he had had a lot of EEGs (which ALL came back normal), MRIs and even a spinal tap.. now he is dealing with the next fase ADHD.... try not to get overwhelmed or scared by epilepsy, if you do your research, talk to the drs, have support from family friends and on here it will become part of your everyday life and you will manage and live with it... i still to this day have it in the back of my mind that he could have another siezure...

My daughter had two EEGs done before they confirmed complex partial epilepsy and prescribed medication.

Our son had his first seizure two days before he turned four years old. At the time, they told us we could go ahead and get the script for anti-seizure meds or wait. We try to be as anti-Rx as possible so we chose to refuse the med at the time. Our son did not have another seizure (that we are aware of) until ten months later. It was then that we decided to go ahead and get the Rx for an anti-seizure med. He has had EEG's but only very minor brain activity fluctuations every show up when they have been done on him.

my son had febrile convulsions before he was diagnosed with epilepsy and put on medication. his first eeg was done at 10 months but did not show epilepsy, the second one at age 7 did. his last one at 13 also showed activity on top of that an mri revealed a slight hardening of the hipposomething and he tick some of the boxes for autism but not all.

well she was taken in to the hospital with symptoms of neurological decline(her eyes were not folllowing) . so i took her to the hospital and they did numerous tests on her. MRI, menangitis,CT,needle biopsy. the biiopsy came back that she indeed have a hypothalamic hamartoma. at that time they just watched her. that was at 2 and 1/2 months old. it was until she was 3 years old that she was diagnosed with Epilepsy and then put on her first seizure medicine. She was having seizures the whole time, gelastic ones...they were hard to notice. gelastic seizures are laughing ones..so i never knew she was seizing i thought she was laughing. hope that helps. if u have any more questions dont hesitate to ask.

My daughter was given an EEG/EMU, MRI, Lumbar Puntucture before diagnosis. We had been seizure free until last week. Before he would begin meds again we did a 3 day hospital stay with an EEG/EMU and another MRI.
