My son's doctor wants to switch him from Depakote to Trileptal. He is on 875 mgs Depakote (he has been on this dose for over 9 years). She wants him switched completely in a 2 to 3 week period.... I don't know what dose she will start with because she wouldn't tell me, or how high she will go in dosage.

How fast do other doctors switch medications? What are your experiences? He has complex partial seizures which generalize sometimes to grand mal.

Thank you everyone!

Sue

your welcome, I know it can be very scary when switching meds, I hope it works out for you. Depakote was not stopping my son's sleep seizures so he is not taking Lamictal and Depakote, whivh scres the hell out of me since they do not interact well together.

Thank you Sabrina for letting me know that your son didn't have trouble adjusting! That is peace of mind for me. I don't know why I am so afraid. We are seeing the doctor in a couple of weeks and we want to make the right decision. This really helps us decide. :) I hope your son is doing well on Depakote.

Sue, the transition was smooth, only side effects we experinced were some slight moodiness and he was a liitle more tired on the Depakote. If only trileptal workd for my son, he continued having sleep seizures (ESESS) so we couldn't continue with it but it had the least side effects and it was has been the only drung my son has taken that has not altered his mood, personality or behavior.

Sabrina. Thank you for letting me know the speed that they changed your son from the different meds. That makes me feel better about changing over so quickly. Your son didn't have any problems changing over so fast, like being sad and crying, etc.
Thank you for your help!

My 6 year old son took Trileptal after being on Keppra, it took 3 days to wein off Keppra. His dose was 7.5ml in the am and 5ml in the evening. Recently his dose was changed from Trileptal to Depakote sprinles which I was told to give both meds for one day and then stopp the trileptal the next day.

Everyone has different reactions to meds, I hope this works for your son and it a n easy transition.
