My husbands family has had at least eight children from cousins, nieces siblings. they all had different kinds of seizures. My daughter has had the worst of it all she is Complex partial epilepsy and has had many seizures. The doctors first told me it wasn't genetic I know it is. One of my husbands nieces died from it in Mexico probably because of inadequate health care. So in my experience yes it can be genetic which they are doing studies on now. Again all of the children had different forms of seizures that lasted a few months, years. God Bless

To Laura Foy,
My 4yr old was so on the ball and made aware previously of my condition that when I had a seizure and knocked myself out after a shower in the bathroom (we were both jammed in and her dad had worked a late shift and was asleep at the end of the house). I had given Amelia enough info to keep me safe on my side and warm..... She used every towel in the bathroom to cover my naked body.. She continued to call to her dad till she realised it was useless and it was only after I became concious that she could call and ambo wake dad and they both dressed me for hospital,,, Very occassionally my post-ictal recovery is crap... Usually it is amazing!!!!

To, Lora Foy. My name is Julie and I have epilepsy as well!!! My 4 year old has seen me have a seizure. After I rested I sat down and talked with her. She asked me questions and I answered them. I explained to her what had happened and why "mommy" had the seizure. She was very scared but now she knows and is such a mommy with me making sure I'm okay. She knows when Im tired is when it happens most. She was never alone when she saw me have one until a year ago. She was calm and knew what to do. She picked up the phone and called my husband. It's really scarey I know!!! But my advice is to be up front and honest with him. Also teach him at least 1 phone # and how do dial 911. I hope this helps!!! Julie

I think it depends on the type and the reason for the epilepsy. I had epilepsy as a child due to a scar that was left on the brain tissue due to a fever going too high. My daughter is 2 and doesn't have epilepsy and the doctors say that she won't b/c my epilepsy was onset by the a trauma and not by heredity.

Hi, I'm Kate and was told epilepsy was famalial, not genetic. Prior to me I had a great grandma whom ended up in an asylym sp. However we will never know if this heredidically caused the scars on my brain which induced infantile spasms and made them much worse!!! My nephew contracted nightly grand mal/tonic clonic seziezures at approx 12 and 1/2 at 15 he is fully seizure and medication free..... My daughter at 10 has just started blanking out and having muscular type spasms that of a petit mal.... After 1 EEG there are mild abnormalaties on her L and R Tempororal Lobes. They are yet to call this epilepisy without further tests. Jodie my philosophy is that I have lived with accute chronic epilepsy all my adult life and as my children are so used to it and have been from infanthood ( everybody underesimates a childs response) that teachining my young child to avoid stigma involves honesty with teachers and later their peers..... THERE ARE WORSE THINGS TO CONTRACT.... MY KIDS JUST MISSED OUT ON CFC....A DEATH PEANALTY!!!!!!!

It can be heridritary which is what has happened with my mum and my cousin who both have abnormalities on the left temple, however my 7 yr old sons epilepsy is not heredritary as he has all different types of epilepsy and numerous abnormalities all over his brain, ethans epilepsy was probably due to birth trauma after being in my tum 4 a week b4 we realized there was no water around him as my waters had gone without me knowing and he had covered himself with meconium which is toxic and kill the baby, he is very lucky 2 b alive, bless him hope this info helps x x x Lucy

Not necessarily, Epilepsy can be genetic. It depends on the type and cause of the seizures disorder you have.
