my son was on keppra for 2 years, and the behavior problems were out of control. The b6 helped a little. He started to have liver problems due to the keppra, so be sure and have that checked regularly because it is a known side effect of the keppra. We switched to topamax after we found out about the liver damage.

My 3 year old has been on Keppra for almost 2 weeks and the only side effect I have seen is she has been a little more hyper but that even seemed to wear off after a few days on the medicine. We are still adding a little each day to get her to the correct dose but so far she seems to be sleeping so much better...not waking much during the night and more awake in the morning than she use to be. I honestly think she was having activity at night that we didnt know about. She is 3 and has been dx with BRE. I am praying this is the med for her. Good luck

I have to say that the B6 is a lifesaver with the mood swings. My 4 year old was recently switched to keppra from topamax. He's been on topamax for a year but the generic form is on backorder until July and our insurance wouldn't pay for the non-generic so I called the neurologist and he switched us to keppra. Right now he's on both until the topamax runs out on thursday so that the keppra can get into his system. We had a HORRIBLE weekend, he was angry, agressive and would not let me do anything at all. I couldn't even walk from the kitchen to the bathroom without him hanging from my shirt or leg, basically he was acting like a clingy 1 year old. Finally in desperation I looked up the b6 information and went out and got some. We have a MUCH happier boy today.

My daughter took Keppra when she was 5 or 6, along with depakote I think, it made her change so badly, almost psychotic. There are so many medications out there, many that will not cause unnecessary side afftects and even work better, we took her off of it and the behavior changes stopped.

When my son started Keppra, he was intolerable for a few weeks until he got a theraputic level then he kind of mellowed out some. He still is very, very crabby at times - but its not all the time. Mostly in the morning when he has to go to school, and if he doesn't get his way - and he is almost 11. He has been on it since he has been 3. Good luck to you. Sometimes a b6 vitamin will help calm them down and make them happier. It works for my son.

Definitely voice your concerns to your Doctor, they may be able to give him something else.

My daughter is 10 and has been on Keppra since Friday, today was her 4th day taking it. I've also noticed a mood change in her. Normally she is pretty moody and has an attitude most of the time, lately she's been in an extremely good mood. I do notice that she has been sleeping more soundly at night. Not sure if its comfort of knowing that we are taking good care of her, or the drowsiness side effect of the meds. I'm certainly not complaining about the positive attitude change, but it makes me wonder why its changed so suddenly and if its a good thing.
On several other posts from other mom's, I've noticed most of them report side effects of aggression, acting out and irritability. Many mom's are posting that they are using an age appropriate dose of vitamin B6 to counter act the side effect. I have not gotten that far yet that we have tried this personally, but it may help to speak to your doctor and continue doing research.

Amber,

Normally they don't give keppra alone..they usually add it with another seizure med. In our case my daughter right now is only on the keppra....My daughter's nero suggested giving her Vit B6 to help with the behavior problems. It does help. I haven't used it since after my daughter's surgery because I haven't gotten a refill of it and you will not take it and fights me with it. I would also ask them why they added the keppra you have that right as a parent. Hope this helps a little.
