Hi. I was wondering if anyone has heard anything about taking cold medicines such as Mucinex or Triaminic with the seizure medicine will have a reaction. My doctor says it wont but I am worried. I have read that taking cold medicines are not good for children with epilepsy because it can cause them to seize. Does anyone have any advice on this topic? Thanks!

hi my son suffers seizures and quite often takes cold medicines without having seizures, if dr says its ok i am sure it will be. Just be sure to keep an eye on your child after giving it.

I was told that the medicine ingredients could trigger a seizure. It isnt really the reaction with the seizure edicine it is the alcohol, and sugar in the medicine that can trigger one at least that is what I understand.

Hi! You have to be very careful. At what you give your child. My son has seizure's. And certain medicine's could counter act. With whatever your child is taking. I know my son's doctor. Said it's fine to take tylenol. Depending on your child's weight and age. I hope this helps you. Good Luck! :)

Hi Nicole,
I had 2-3 different doctors say it was okay to give Benedryl (children's Benedryl) - 2 of which were pediatric neuros. I've never heard this before and am curious why that it is?
Thank you.

My daughter's neurologist suggest she not take anything with a decongestant in it. It will just lessen the effectiveness of the Keppra. We use all natural remedies when she is sick. WE use the old lemon juice and honey for when she has a cough, a nettie pot when she is stuffed up and it can be a pain but they usually work, just not as quick as the OTC meds.

How old is your son? When my son starts coughing I give him this stuff called "honey dont cough" and it helps a lot.

I have epilepsy and when ever I got a cold as a child, my parents gave me cold medication. I never had a seizure from it. But if you feel really strongly about it, get a second opinion from another doctor. But I think its ok.

I hear you!!! My daughter is 25 now (her seizures started when she was 10) and 20 months seizure free!!! She has had a baby and the hormones were good for her.. Her siezures were triggered by stress the last 4 years or so, now she has to continously learn to handle and manage her stress levels. you never stop caring and worrying about your child but i learnt not to allow my fears to rule my mind. Our children are incredible creatures and have the ability in them to cope and all we can do is to teach them to find their strength and apply it ,,,,often it is in how WE handle our lives..... take care!

Thanks Yvonne. I talked to my "intelligent" doctor and my neuro both and they agreed with what you have said. I just have to ride out this chest cold with my son and use a humidifier but it is so terrible to hear him coughing so deeply. It seems like no matter what you do the seizure threshold is lowered. The illness itself will lower it and then medicines may lower it. It is very frustrationg not being able to help your child the way you wish you could.

Hi, i found that codiene (oftrn in cold and headache medications) and any form of antihistamine in the medicine lowered my daughters seizure threshold. once even causing a seizure. The neurologist agreed that that is correct.

Hi i am a mum with epilepsy. Yes my doctors and pharmacists tell me i am not allowed or anyone on drugs for epilepsy not to take cough medicines and the doctors will tell me to watch out for other tablets like neurofene and other cold and flu tablets that can interfere with my meds.

SWEETIE, DON'T BOTHER ASKING YOUR DOCS...THEY DON'T REALLY FOCUS ON THE INTERACTIONS AS MUCH AS A PHARMACIST DOES. ASK YOUR PHARMACIST, THEY WILL LEAD YOU IN THE RIGHT DIRECTION. THAT IS THEIR AREA OF EXPERTISE. ALSO, MAKE SURE IF YOU GIVE MUCINEX THAT YOU ALSO GIVE A FULL 8 OUNCES OF WATER WITH EACH PILL OR IT BECOMES THICKER AND MORE DIFFICULT TO EXPEL THE MUCOUS.

Some of them sure can be rude. When we saw the NP the last time I told them about the nurse and what she said and that I really don't want to call because of that and she's like please do still call. But why call when your not going to get much help and all. Yea so I just don't try to give her anything and hope that it goes away. She's not a med taker and she's starting to fight talking her seizure med again...Oh and if you would like a site to an epilepsy group on yahoo send me a message and I'll get you it. It is very helpful. I do hope that the cold goes away and you don't have to give her anything.

Thanks Nicole for responding. I am kinda in that hoping it will go away because I just dont trust giving anything to my son. I was just curious about what others thought because I have been told it was okay so there is conflicting information. Like you said in your post, the doctors are a bit rude when you ask them.

Hi, I have asked a few times about that to our nero doc and ped doctor. The nero's nurse that I talked to was really rude about it when I called and asked them about it. I know that Bendyral is one med that is not to be given to a kid that has seizures. I usually give my daughter Dimetapp when she get's a cold, but she's not a real med taker either so half the time I try not to give her anything for her colds at all and hope that it goes away on it's own. I don't know about the other cold meds. Sorry.

Nicole
