The only time my son has seizures is when he's waking up

My son is 8 years old. He developed seizures after his 3rd heart surgery when he was about 9 months old. There were complications and he suffered severe brain damage. He's on three medications: Keppra, Phenobarb & Topamax. His seizures are mild and only happen 90% of the time when he wakes up from a nap throughout the day and less often when he gets up in the morning. The more he naps, the more seizures he has. Does anyone have a similar experience?

By experience, seizures happen by not getting of oxygen to the brain. When a person lays down it cuts down, in some, the percentage of oxygen they are receiving. Ask Dr. If she will do a oxygen test why he is asleep at night. Some Dr.do not believe exist, it has been proven by several people. I will pray for you and son to find out the cause.

My 3 yr old son with autism started having seizures four months ago...seems like always in the early morning when he's sleeping or about to wake up. He's had one every month..has had two really bad ones that took him to picu unit at hospital-as lasted very long but now with diazepam they are usually lasting 10-15 minutes..they have ran all tests on him...lumbar tap, blood test, cat scan, MRI and EEG..all normal. now as we use diazepam as recommended by his neuro when the seizure lasts longer han three mins. every time though it is a trip to the er by ambulance because it's dangerous when seizures last longer than five minutes according to his neuro. He has frequent ear infections and seems to have a seizure every time he has an ear infection. We are getting ear tubes put in his ear to see if that will help we were recommended to go to an ENT ear nose throat doctor...And also since the last seizure on dec 14 2012 we've started him on pharmax finest pure fish oil with essential orange(flavor to mask the smell) (5ml a day)...and see if that will help..heard that the omega 3 fatty acids in it help the reduce brain inflammation and fish oil is perfectly safe to give every day..he does seem more alert now since taking fish oil..keeping our fingers crossed this may work as we don't want to medicate him..have heard many scary side effects on seizure medicines especially for toddler s with autism.

Yes, my sons only has them when he's half asleep half awake etc. In the middle of the night. He only has them though when his meds need upped otherwise they're under control. Hes on Lamictol. Phen and Topimax made him very crabby and the Dr didnt bother to tell me that Phen. significantly delays development. He slept pretty much all day when he was on Phen. He had West Syndrome type seizures aka Infantile Spasms since he was 4 months old, he's now 8.

Your child is experiencing a Awakening Grand Mal Seizure. It has may different reasons to why its happening. Medicines or family history looks like in this case.

My daughter began having partial seizures when she was 2 years old, they were always in the morning. she would be eating breakfast and then drop to the ground. First they put her on keppra but she would still continue to have aura's and after they increased ehr medication twice, they switched her to trileptal. We have been seizure and aura free now for 6 months.

My son is 2 1/2 and has seizures weekly. His only seizures are when he is first going to sleep or waking up. He has never had one while awake. We have had top switch Neurologist because his first one just wanted to experiment with different meds and not look more into the reason why they were happening beyond doing EEG's and MRI's. Now we are with our new Neurologist they did a spinal tap and he has a low Pyridoxal level. Our next step is to see if he has the deficiency...if so this is why he is having them. Please get a second opinion as to why your child is having seizures. Dont jus accept it happens and try a new med.

Well my daughter is 10 and has the same episodes and they keep wanting to increase her meds so I talked to them about doing something different and they told me to check into the vegal nerve stimulator=(like a pacemaker for the brain) if it is successfull I can get her off these meds that drag her down so bad. good luck hun

Thanks everyone. It was never really explained. One doctor a while back said it was just a coincidence. I knew that couldn't be true. His new doctor has mentioned the diet. Eddie is G-tube fed. We need to talk with his cardiologist because a high fat diet may not be recommended. Have been told that three meds is a lot.

Hi Margaret

My daughter has absence seizures, and also after waking from naps during day. Docter reassured us that the reason for this was because the brain is hovering between two states of consciousness when they wake up, therefore this time is a very vulnerable time foe kids with epilepsy. He did say that the dose of the medication should be adjusted each time, until no more of these breakthru seizures happen anymore.

U should speak to your docter, as the meds should cover your child during all periods of the day and all phases of brain wave activity.

My son has sz, very well controlled on Keppra & Topamax. He also had sz during the wake/sleep period. We figured it was just a more susceptible time in the brain cycle, something to do w the transition between brain waves.
