To medicate or not?

Our son was recently diagnosed with a seizure disorder after a day of what appeared to be 5 partial seizures that were localized to only his mouth. He also had an abnormal EEG. His neuro wants to immediately put him on medicine, but we are worried about side effects. Also, if we don't know what type of seizures he might have, how do we know the medicine will even work?

We are getting a 2nd opinion next week, but are worried, scared and confused. Has anyone else decided not to medicate after receiving this diagnoses?

Thanks,

Lauren

I agree...the right medication is the key but its worth a try. If left untreated..they can get worse. Good luck and god bless.

My son is 7 and had his "first" seizure at the age of 4. I understand your concerns and confusion. But I also cannot stress the importance of anti-seizure med's. Left untreated, seizures can become worse over time. What starts as only his mouth, can grow into full body tonic clonic seizures. Why take chances with that?

Often times, medications are hit or miss. What works for one, does not necessarily work for another. Just as what (if any) side effects may or may not show up with your child. One thing you mentioned though, cannot be overlooked. You stated your son had an abnormal EEG. This should be alarming enough to warrant medications be strongly considered. As "Family Mum" stated, "Meds are well researched and tested, any side effects are less risky then the potential harm caused by a seizure."

Yes. I have 2 sons who are epileptic. One was diagnosed with generalized absence seizures at the age of 4 (now 14) and the other started experiencing tonic-clonic seizures at the age of 14 (now 16). Meds have allowed both my boys to participate in life safely! Meds are well researched and tested, any side effects are less risky then the potential harm caused by a seizure.
