My son was diagnosed with partial seizures over the weekend. His EEG revieled alot of activity on the frontal Left Lobe. Over the past few months he has experienced focal motor seizures which have increased w/ frequency and length/ strength of the the seizures. He was placed on trileptal and has had 6 doses. Beginning shortly after the second dose, my son started exhibiting major mood swings from aggression/ physical aggressiveness to crying, to large increases in hyperactivity like someone who appeared as if they were on drugs or cocaine.

My son has always been lively but this is way out of context for him. I feel sorry for him, he's crawling out of his skin.

Anyone else experienced these mood swings in their child? If so, what changes were made?

That was my son's first medication when he started to have seizures 2 years ago when he was 13. His mood changed also. He would become very "snappy" and slam his door in anger. It was a good thing for us when they realized that it wasn't helping him and changed his medication. When they did his behavior mellowed out too.

Hi Rachel.

My son will be starting this medication today for mood swings. I was wondering how your son is doing? I would love any feedback that you have. Thank you so much!

Update on my son. It took a little over a week but he seems to have leveled off. It was a rough wk though. He seems to be doing ok at school. He has also been having seizures about 8 hours after his doses. He will soon be started on an additional dose of 150 mg in the middle of the day. So 150 mg 3 x a day.

Thank you everyone for sharing. I'll update after we add the additional dose.

My daughter began Trileptal last Wednesday as we are tapering off of Keppra which made her behavior OFF THE CHARTS. Now that we are tapering the Keppra it seems to be helping but she does seem extra sensitve/whiny/crying so it very well could be the Trileptal

My daughter is on Trileptal for epilepsy and I wouldn't be surprised if part of her mood swings is brought on by the medication. She has been really crabby and hitting and kicking and screaming lately more so than not and right now she hasn't had it for about a day and a half since we are waiting on a refill.

My son just had his first dose of this Friday and then they held it to do the EEG - we are off to get the prescription now! They gave him this medication as they said it usually helps with behaviour - our son can get frustrated and hit and kick out at his brother and sister.

There was another medication that they said was the primary medicine - I think it was keppra but they said this can cause behavioural issues so we agreed on the trileptal. I will keep you posted how he does once we start him up again and wish you lots of luck! you are not on your own going through this.
