Hi you guys. My name is Brittany. I had a preemie at thirty five weeks and five days. We were told last week that he had acid reflux and have been put on Zantac. He took his first dose yesterday and seems to be doing a bit better today. However I am looking for any suggestions. He is breastfed and does not get any formula. He only put on four ounces last week. He also spits up a lot. Thanks you guys. Also his name is Elijah.

The spit up will probably happen often until he gets older and starts solids and/or starts sitting up by himself. Be wary of the weight sensitive Zantac, everytime we had the dose increased and things were going well, a few weeks later it would all go down hill again. If that happens, inquire to your doctor about prevacid or prilosec, they are not as weight sensitive and they stop the production of stomach acid vs. just neutralizing it. Definitely give any reflux meds 1/2-1 hour before the first morning feeding (on an empty stomach). Once any food hits the belly in the am, the acid production has started for the day. Good luck.

Hi Brittany-

That's great that the zantac is working for him. I not sure what kind of suggestions you are looking for? But you can elevate his crib mattress to make him more comfortable, and keep him upright after feedings in a bouncing seat for a 1/2 hr. Also, I found that zantac worked best when given a half hour prior to a feeding. Zantac is also weight sensitive so as your child grows he will likely outgrow the dosage. Unfortunately reflux medications do not stop the spit up, they just neutralize the acid in the stomach so it doesn't burn when it comes up. My dd was ebf as well, and I noticed that she did not gain as much weight as my ds did w/ formula, however ever baby is different. As long as you are nursing on demand and he seems satisfied I wouldn't worry to much about it. Hope your little one is feeler better soon. Good Luck!
