OMG! Okay so I am taking Colton to a new doctor. I didn't like his old one. So, I told her that his GERD has been acting up really bad! She told me about this stuff call Simply Thick. OMG!!! It's awsome. I didn't want to put cereal in his bottles. It's a gel and you put 1-1.5 tsp. in his bottle and it thinkens the formula! His GERD is under control! Only little spit ups now! Oh, whats even better! It's over the counter! Although my pharmacy had to order but they had it the next day. So, if your LO is still having trouble with GERD/reflux talk to your doctor about Simply Think! I want to know why the other FOUR, yes count them FOUR, doctors that I took him to didn't mention this! I just HAD to share you ya'll!

Simply Thick is great because it's made of Xanthen (sp?) Gum. There are other products like Thick It that are made with corn starch. Things like corn, oatmeal, even rice can cause allergies when given to infants that are too young for solids. Many doctors will tell you cereals (especially rice because it is "most hypoallergenic") are totally safe, but if you've been around enough children with severe GI issues you'll know that food allergies are a huge problem and more and more dieticians are saying that grains should be the absolute LAST solid you introduce into your child's diet. If your child is old enough, has been introduced to all solids, and can stand the added calories, I would definitely go with adding cereal. But Simply Thick has no flavor and can be added to juices, and you can use it to make ice and popcicles. So you might still want to keep some on hand.

If you can't find a local pharmacy that can order Simply Thick, try calling a hospital pharmacy, or it can be ordered on ebay in packet form or in a pump. Or, as Cristina said, you can make your own by looking up a recipe online.

My daughter has severe reflux and aspirates, and thickening has really done wonders.

Just be careful w/ simply thick alot of SLPs don't like to use it. We tried it but found oatmeal works best for us because #1 it's a food #2 it adds calories. There is a recipe online that tells you how to make your own simply thick to save money. We thicken because of aspiration issues.
