hi, my name is tanya and my 7yr old son is extremely bright for his age. the thing that sucks though, is that at his school, they wont put him up any further. they put him up to grade 3, but he could do grade 3 work at the age of 3yrs!
its very frustrating as he gets really bored because he needs a challenge. hes so far infront of all the other students, but they still wont do anything. he goes to a private school so im just wondering if thats y? im really considering putting him into a public school.

does anybody else have a simular problem?

Progressive schools (as opposed to traditional schools) offer individualized teaching so kids can stay with their own age group and do different school tasks. My bright son goes to one and he hates missing a school day. We just had a conversation where he said he couldn't understand why kids wouldn't want to go to school. :)

I'm not sure if you would be interested in homeschooling, but you can do public school at home and he can move at his own pace and move up as many grades as needed. K12.org is the website. I almost went this route for my DD, but he school district took let her start a year early and she'll attend a school for gifted after this year.

Hi everyone. You may want to try KUMON. If they have it in your area. It is really good for keeping your child challenged when the school won't. My 4yr old is very ready for kindergarten. She was in a private school, which was good, but wouldn't move her ahead to kindergarten due to her age. Public school definitely wouldn't take her, because of her age. I kept up my search and finally found a small private school, only 8 kids in the kindergarten class, that tested her and accepted her.

Yes, my daughter is 7 years and very bright. I have had her tested for gifted twice and she's been just shy of the mark both times leaving her still an above average student. I am frustrated because she is so bored in her classes and finishes her weeks worth of homework in one day but she loves her school, teachers and friends. I am frustrated at this point but Im feeling my only option may be to continue challenging her at home after school. I would rather them add more challenging work to stimulate her, I don't want her to loose interest in school. My older son is in 5th and she is always trying to do his homework and reads at a 5th grade reading level. I can totally find similarity in our situations.

I would say it all has to do with where you live. Some public schools have great programs for gifted kids and some don't do anything at all. There are also private schools out there that are designed for gifted kids or at least are more gifted kid friendly. Having some documentation of his abilities might be useful in having discussions with various schools. Check out http://www.hoagiesgifted.org.
