Taking away the Paci.

My daughter is almost 2 1/2 and will start daycare in the fall. The daycare does not allow them to have pacis at that age. I would love to hear suggestions on how to take it away, with the least amount of damage to her. She only has two, last week she had to throw one away that had a rip in it. Any help would be appreciated.

Thank you for all the ideas. Today was P-day at our house, we went to Toysrus and she picked out a great new toy and while I paid she and daddy threw it away. There were a few tears. Nap time was much better than we thought and hopefully bedtime will be the same. She has only brought up the paci twice and says, "My paci is in the garbage, bec. I am a big girl now."

Good luck with the thumb, I sucked mine till I was like 12.

I have no personal experience with this problem, my daughter is 4 months old and has chosen her thumb over paci. (I wonder how I'll wean her of that?) Anyway, a girlfriend of mine was able to rid her 2 year old son off the paci in a fabulous way, maybe it could work for you! She talked to him about the idea of letting the pacifier go for a week beforehand. On the big day, at a pool party, she asked him if he was ready and they collected all his pacifiers. She then tied each one to a balloon and we all gathered for the "ceremony". She allowed her son to say goodbye to all of them and we all waved as she let the balloons fly away. He seemed to understand immediately after and he is now 2 1/2 (paci free) and when I ask about his pacis, he simply says that they went bye bye. I love this idea and we got some great pictures from the ceremony!

I am on day 3 with both of my girls. I have tried this before, but have always given in out of desperation and sleep depravation. My girls are 2 1/2 and 14 months. My oldest goes to a special needs school, and is Autistic. They don't allow her to have it at school. My youngest hasn't really been that attatched to hers, so she is easier. I just told her that they were "all gone". I hid all of them, and when she goes to my bag, or where she knows they used to be, she doesn't find them. The first night was surprisingly the easiest. The second was harder...she was up very late. My youngest just nurses more at night now. Hang in there....I tried cutting the tip, hiding them, slowly giving it to her less...this has been the easiest so far.

Hi Beth

My daughter Hannah stopped taking her pacifier when her teacher in kindergarten asked everyone in class to bring their pacifiers and made everyone throw their pacifiers into the dustbin in class. It worked like a charm. After that day, she stopped. Maybe you can suggest to her teacher or someone she looks up to like a favourite aunt or uncle to do it. Hope this helps. Good Luck!

I've heard some people use the paci fairy with good results. Other people cut a small hole in the nipple so it doesn't work anymore. Since she's already had one rip, maybe you could "help" the others rip. Give her something else to take their place, like the fairy "prize", maybe a new lovey she gets to pick out. Other people have recommended "donating" them to another baby who needs them, since she's now a "big girl" and doesn't need them anymore. I can't tell you what we used, since my daughter gave up her paci for her thumb before she was a year old, and now we're struggling with that. :)

We did ythe paci fairy. My 2.5yo packed upa ll her pacis in a sparkly box and left the out on the front porch for the paci fairy to to take and in return left my daughter a "prize" of her choice. The fairy also left behind some fairy dust going down the porch, down the stairs and down the sidewalk...you should have seem the look on her face!!! Now, that being said, that night was really hard on her. I sat with her for 3 hrs trying to calm her but 3 days later, all was fine!! Hope that helps!!
