My daughter is 21 and the audiologist is suggesting cochlear implants. They are telling me the cost will be picked up by the insurance company, she is considered handicapped since she has several other disabilites so she is still on my insurance. She is hesitant because there is surgery involved. Anyone have any information on this subject?

A wonderful place to research implants is www.hearingjourney.com this is a free online forum you can ask ???'s and meet other parents with CI kiddos. My son is 2 and was implanted at 10 months old. Feel free to ask any quesitons you have and I will do my best to answer them! Good Luck!

Thanks everyone for the information. Since my daughter is 22, I let her make the decision. The biggest issue that she had was that she may not be able to ride the roller coasters!! She did opt out of getting the implant and instead we bought a top of the line hearing aid. She is very happy with the new aid! Thanks Autumn - your comments were actually what I feared - she has already developed her speech to the max and refuses to use sign language so I think she made a good choice!! Happy New Year!

I have taken many classes at my school and we have watched many movies talked with the Deaf community although I have never delt with this personally, I do know that getting a CI done at a later age there will be a speech problem. And the CI may not work as well as u might think it will. it is not a fix it plan. I am not sure what I would do if it were my baby but I know for a fact if my child has already developed her speech I would not do it. I would enroll them into a sign language class. Sign language is a beautiful language and I just love it!! Good luck I am sure u will help her make the right desion for her

Hello,

I have a four and a half year old son who has had a nucleus freedom inplant for approx four years. He has done wonderful with it. I have heard different outcomes from adults in my community who has had the surgery. It takes a long time to get used to the difference in adults is what i have heard. best of luck to you

My 21month old just got bilateral implants on Feb 11, 2010 - The surgery was just under 4 hours, and we were given the option to bring her home that night. We opted to stay in the hospital over night, since she is so little. She was back to herself 3 days later, and has had an amazing recovery. She received the Nucleus 5 from Cochlear America. Make sure you do your research and homework with the three implant companies - Advanced Bionics, is the newest of the three, and has had some pretty serious back to back recalls in the past couple of years. A lot of people have the Advanced Bionics implants, and are happy with them, but from my research and talking with other moms of kids with implants, the AB products have been more of a pain in the back side than Cochlear America and Medel products.

The surgery isn't bad - and the doctors are so good about everything. I was terrified that something would go wrong, but it's such a small procedure and it's not invasive at all.

If you want, you can private message me, and we can talk more, about the whole process if you like.

My 21 month old daughter received the Nucleus5 back in October and had it activated in November. I agree with Becki, check out the website. It is very helpful.
