New hearing aid

Hi there, my son (nearly 6 years) has partial hearing loss in one ear, and has recently got a hearing aid. We have only had the hearing aid for 10 days but it is not going that well. He does not like wearing it, is worried about what people will think, says people will laugh at me etc. He has worn it to school once (last Friday) which went ok, but over the weekend he has been upset and not wearing it much. We have a 3 month trial with the hearing aid to decide it if is helping, so still have a while to go.
I feel like his reaction is entirely normal and appropriate, but am wondering how long it will take him to get used the hearing aid and accept it – I guess it is different for each person.
As his hearing loss is only partial, how will we know if it is helping – I am hoping he will say something to indicate he can hear better but nothing so far.
I’m interested to hear other people’s experiences when their child first got a hearing aid.

My 8 year old son began wearing his when he was two years old. Aside from taking them out and putting them in his mouth while I was driving, we didn't have too much of an issue. We just stopped having him wear them in the car! His are blue and his friends are used to them and think they are cool. He's decided his next pair will be a very cool high tech looking silver.

I see you posted a while back, but wanted to let you know I have a 8yr old just diagnosed partial hearing loss in her left ear and was just fitted for a hearing aid. I was concerned more myself! She is fine with it, but didn't realize that she has to wear it forever! She told me today, "mom, how long do I have to wear this thing, when do I stop wearing it"? That really hit me hard. I thought she knew that it was a "forever" treatment, kinda like her glasses. But that can be changed to contacts! So, I just wanted to let you know that there is support out there. I wish I could connect to more parents with this issue-the partial loss in just one ear! Hope to talk to you later! Annie

one of my children had hearing aids since 2 1/2 and he took a while to get to wear it but the other chlid could hear well until he was 4 1/2 so it was all about what the other children thought but we had a great teacher that always made it out to everyone that it was the coolest thing ever and all the kids liked his super hearing, so talk to the teacher tell her that he is worried.

My son is 6 and has been wearing a hearing aide for almost 3 years. It took him awhile to get used to it. He was worried what other kids might think of it. I told him its just like glasses and some kids have them while others dont. I made it a point to tell him how I thought it looked cool. After a couple months, the audiologist should do a test with it on to see if its helping or not. I hope it goes well.
