Teenagers wearing hearing aids

My son has genetic mid to moderate hearing loss in one ear. He wears a hearing aid. He likes that he can hear in 'Stereo" but it's a struggle to get him to put it on. For a while we had issues with kids at school yelling into the device and band students playing their instrumets into the device. We have even let him grow his hair out to cover his ears so the device doesn't show. The latest device is much smaller. The doctors won't do an inner ear device yet because he is still growing. He does use his mp3 player. When he listens one eared it is the good ear. If you get his attention he takes out teh bad ear. How do I get him to wear it more consistantly?

wow - that's a tough one. my son was diagnosed at birth, and had no issues with wearing his bilateral aids till he turned 17. he resisted for 2 years, and to be honest, we had no choice but to let him have his way. for us, the more we pressured him to wear them, the more he resisted. by 18, he decided to inquire about prosthetic surgery which he did at 20. he now has a prosthetic stapes bone and tendon in one ear, which brought his left ear hearing up to 97 %. his right ear has 50% hearing now.



with victor, we let him deal with the consequences of not wearing his aid, such as having difficulty when out with his friends, trouble in school hearing things etc. i believe that if surgery had not been an option he would have eventually realized that life with his aids were better than without. good luck. :)
