Has anyone had to go through jaw widening?

My 4 year old daughter was born with a soft palate cleft. It was successfully repaired at 7 months and we haven't had any other issues with it. Now her Orthodontist is saying that she will probably need to have her jaw widened using appliances or worst case scenario surgery. I was just wondering if anyone else has a child that had to go through this and what I should expect?

My six year old son was born with such a wide cleft palate that his surgeons refer to his dx as not having a maxilla.
He has been wearing a form of the device you speak of...his is a Helix. It is much less invasive that the distractions and we have the same objective - to expand his palate/maxilla in preparation of a successful bone graft this summer. I hope this helps; I'd be glad to answer anything that I can be of assistance with - I'm an RN, mom, State of MI Dept of Community Health advisory board committee member - and President of an IRS tax-exempt support organization. Maybe we can learn more together! Teresa@MiCleft.org

My daughter had jaw distraction surgery at 13 months old. I don't know if that is the same as what your daughter is facing. The surgeons broke her jaw, wired it with screws and opened the space 9mm. It was 12 days in the PICU and then she was fine.
