does anyone know much about the shriners?my son has government insurance but you kinda get what you pay for. Ian is 19 months old now, getting ready to do alot more standing and eventually walk; his foot and ankles dont hold weight evenly or well, so he will need afos soon and im not sure if my insurance will help as much as i need them to. for example: Ian need glasses and insurance only paid 60 dollars out of the total 220.

Shriners are amazing!!!! I live in Ontario but had received care for myself when I was 17 in Erie, PA. The whole staff is absolutely amazing! I have SB myself and hip displaycia (sorry can't spell it properly). They operated on my hips, straightened my left femur, realighned my right ankle when the Ontario hospitals told me they wouldn't do anything for me. I am much more active now. They paid for all the expense, gas money, somewhere for my mom and I to stay down there the night before so I could be on time for my surgeries... They even offered to drive us down (5hr drive one way). They are my angels. I have been to different hospitals and Shriners provided us the best care. Most of the time it didn't even feel like a hospital and I was there for a month recovering from one surgery. The are very gentle in their approach with physical therapy too. They had people from the navy come in to boost spirits, therapy dogs, clowns, etc. Kinda embarrasing for me as I was older but they even took me in as a patient when I was past the age limit at one point. They are truely a medical marvel. Don't hesitate. Your child will be given the most advanced care and only if it will help them. They don't do any unnecessary procedures...unlike some places. I wish I could tell you more... If you like you can email me and I can get you my sponsor's name and phone number, I'm sure he can provide you with someone local to you to get the ball rolling. To give you some idea how much I believe in their work, I gave a speach to about 800 people (some Shriners, some family of Shriners, the Head of the Ontario Provinicial Police, our city Mayor, the Grand Chief of Shriners, etc) on my story. The purpose of this was to remind the Shriners why their fundraising is so very important. I was nervous as all get out but there was no way I was going to miss this. I wish your son and your family all the best!!!

Shriners is awesome!! My daughter goes there for her SB clinic and they are so nice and very great doc's. It's all free the clinics and surgery. They also fit there own braces which are free as well. It's a very wonderful organization and they have everything except Neuro. My daughter docs include a urologist, orthopedist and a rehab doc. I highly reccomend them!

I love Shriners and not just because its free, but they all work together well, when we go we see a PT, OT, brace guy, wheelchair guy, nurse, and doctor and they all watch him walk and check out his legs. we see them every 6months and once a yr they take x-rays of his hips and legs. Sam is 7 and walks with arm canes most of the time

Shriner's is great. It is free health care til the child is 18. You need to get an application from a Shriner. Try giving them a call or if you spot one out and about one day- stop him and ask. I do know other sources if your in CA or GA. For other resources I can tell you to ask the other moms in the doctors offices or at therapy. They usually know more than the doctors.

i'm not real sure but i think there are special programs out there. I recieved alot of information through our spina bifida clinic; for example we were eligible for WIC because my daughter has govement ins. We just got a stander, short afo's and a full hip to feet brace and they paid for it all. I would look into it, i am not sure where u are form but i live in PA and they paid for it all.
