my 24weeker had sever ROP, she will be 3 in October. She's had 4 laser surgeries and one surgery the summer of 2010. She's been wearing glasses since 7months old with her prescription getting worse. She is now considered legally blind without her glasses and we have moved to contact lenses because her glasses are so heavy and she has no peripheal vision with her glasses. The contacts aren't going so well however, we just got them 2 weeks ago and have only been able to get them in a couple of days!

tabitha it will be okay, im sure the other kids will just be curious about the patches, if you are worried about it you should talk to his preK teacher ahead of time so she has the information she needs to help the kids understand, also maybe you should talk to your son about it ahead of time so he knows what to say when kids ask, good luck :)

my almost 25 weeker, now 4 yo is left eye 20/800 and right 20/300. We still patch his "better eye" to strengthen the left but it kinda looka like we are at a plateau... Its time for preK im so nervous about how other kids are gonna react to his glasses and/or the patches....

My 23wkr daughter was diagnosed to have ROP. It started out as Stage 2 and then went to stage 3. As the disease is becoming aggresive, we decided to let her have an off label injection (AVASTIN) and then laser surgery on both her eyes. it has only been 2 months now and our doc says her ROP has stopped. But because it can come back, we still need to see her eye doctor every bow and then. Also, we were told that the risk of our lo being near sighted is high :(

I can totally sympathize with you, unfortunately it's a waiting game! We've even discussed with our doctor the option of contacts for her because she is so hard on her glasses and outgrows them quickly. We follow up next month, hoping her prescription is the same this time because we just bought her 2 new pairs! Of course insurance only covers one pair of year, not taking into consideration that these little ones have special needs with there eyesight!

my daughter was a 24wkr and had severe ROP. She had 4 laser surgeries in the NICU and has had 2 more surgeries since discharge, one to remove a blood clot (from all the laser surgeries) and a second to correct her lazy eye in both eyes. She is severly nearsighted and wears glasses, her prescription continues to get worse unfortunately. We may need one more surgery in the next year or so. She started wearing glasses at 7m old, she is now almost 2 1/2. We thank God everyday that she can at least see & she adjusted wonderfully to wearing glasses!
