My son is 15 months old (12 corrected) and still doesn't want to eat any real food. He chokes and gags really easily. He loves eating Gerber food but I keep trying to give him real food and he's not interested. I was wondering if anyone else has had this issue with their preemie and what they did to resolve it??

My son is 27 months old and still eats Gerber food. He has the same problem and gets feeding therapy. They only real food he'll eat is Mac and cheese and some oatmeal. Once in a while he'll eat scrambled eggs with cheese. As long as the food is mushy. have you thought about feeding therapy? My son has Sensory processing disorder so he doesnt even want to touch a new food--very frustrating but working through it!

Good luck!!!

Thanks Jenn that's really helpful:) I'm thinking he'll probably need a feeding specialist. He may just be overly picky also, who knows. He loves eating cheerios and puffs so at least I know he can eat other things besides just pureed food. But if I give him the Gerber food that have the small chunks of food in it, he won't eat it. Just keeps it in his mouth and won't even try swallowing it

We had the same problem. She would eat the Gerber third foods but if we gave her real food she'd either try to eat it really fast and choke or have no interest. Even after she started eating real foods she still didn't want to eat meats. We started speech therapy (through 1st steps) and they helped us with the feedings issues too. They suggested that we try giving her the puff snacks and crackers as started foods. We also did applesauce (basically baby food), other mashed fruits, and the gerber cheese puff things. They had us also do "exercises" to help strengthen her jaw and gain tongue control. Try putting gerber food on the sides of his month so he has to move it with his tongue and play tug of war with a toy or spoon where he hold one end in his teeth. Our daughter was 3 months early too and didn't really stop eating the gerber meals until she was almost 18 months. Keep offering real food and in small quantities prior to opening the jars. Hope you find something that works.

I'm not really sure what Gerber food is to be honest, but presume it's the sort of jar you buy a baby when they first start solids. Anyway, have you tried to blend normal food and given him that? Perhaps try that and gradually introduce very small lumps into it, working to bigger ones. Otherwise I don't really know. Have you spoken to a health visitor or doctor about this? Is the choking and gagging actually choking and gagging or "put on"? If it's put on you need to persist with normal food and not give him the gerber. If he's hungry he will eat it in the end. Good luck with this. If it continues I would definately seek medical advice as eating disorders can be a major problem.
