I too had a premature baby. My daughter Alexis was born at 27 weeks gestation, weighed 2 lbs, 3 oz and was 15 1/2 inches long at birth. I was only 18-years-old, a new wife and a very scared and overwhelmed mother. Alexis was born blue as a result of complications with her birth, was on a ventilator for almost two full months and endured countless tests, blood draws and blood infusions. After birth, she lost 10% of her body weight (as most infants do) and as a result, weighed only 1 lb, 9 oz. I remember endless nights sitting by her isolette wondering what was going to happen to my darling angel girl. Luckily, I had the immense support of my family and friends in the face of such an ordeal.
Now, Alexis is a healthy, happy and vibrant 9-year-old girl. She has no lasting effects of her premature birth, is doing exceptional in school and shows a strong talent in the artistic field. She is a sweet, loving and amazing girl who is kindness personified and the best big sister anyone could ask for. Maybe we were just extremely lucky, or that the stars were smiling down upon us...but every day I am so thankful for my daughter overcoming such an obstacle. :D
