Hello! I have a 23 weeker daughter. And her name is Kayin. She is still in NICU. Today, we got the results of her blood tests and she would be needing another transfusion (her third, already). This got me wondering on how many more transfusions should I expect. How many did your precious preemie get? and why?

Congratulations on your baby! She must be so tiny... my dau was 36 weeks (8 lbs) but had lung development of 24 weeker, she stayed in the NICU 10 weeks and had 3 transfusions. My dau is now 13 yrs old and has some asthma problems but nothing we cant handle. Those high and low rides of the NICU were so chaotic. Hugs to you.

Our little ones are so little they don't have much blood volume.
Not knowing any of her complications I am going to go on what I know from my experience.
I am assuming that with the gestational age your baby is needed a respirator to breath. With that comes blood gases, with that comes blood draws.
Our little guys don't have much blood, each they take might not seem like much to us but it's draining on them.
They have to replenish it with transfusions in order to keep them health.
COngrats on your 23 weeker

Hi there,
My son was a 32.6 weeker, and had two blood transfussions while in the NICU. He was born at 3 pounds 3 ounces, and the reason he needed it was because he became anemic because of his low blood count. The doctors reassured me it was very common in premature babies.

Thank you so much, kind ladies, for giving me an idea on how many more I might be expecting..You are all right..I am having a roller coaster ride! If not for this site, I don't have anywhere else to go to ask opinion and support. We don't really have an org/foundation here (Philippines) for preemies. Its so overwhelming the first couple of weeks. But now that I found this community, I am not too much at a lost anymore :P
And yes! prayers do help! We need a lot of those pls :P My daughter is sooo tiny that I believe God is with her, helping her, in beating the odds everyday!

My son was born at 25 weeks and during his 3month stay in the NICU and his return visit to the PICU he had at least 10 blood transfusions. So there are probably at least a few more in your daughters future...good luck and congratulations!

Hello. Yes, congratulations! My son was a 28 weeker and had only 2. But another girl we know was 29 weeks and had at least 3. I am so thankful for blood donors now!! I had to get some blood when I was pregnant also so know how much better it feels to get it. Yes, you will be on a roller coaster ride and just praying for you and your little girl!

Firstly Id like to congratulate you on your 23 weeker, you will be going through a lot at the moment.
We had a 24 weeker and she was having blood transfussions every 2-3 days so I lost count of how many she had in total. Not to mention all the other tests, scans etc etc. Wishing you the best for a minimal roller coaster ride over the next few months, stay strong. X
