My daughter was born at 29 weeks and weighed 2lbs 3ozs. She is now almost 5 years old and is still not talking. She's been getting speach therapy since she was 18months old. Did any body have this problem? What helped? and what were the outcomes.

my daughter was a 26 week twin weighing in at 1lb 5oz. She barely spoke 10 words by about 4 years old. She was being followed by audiology and we were told she had mild low frequency hearing loss. Audiology did not think she required hearing aids as her loss was so mild. Someone recommended a fm system for preschool. The company selling the fm system recommended we get a system that hooked into hearing aids and that we could just keep the hearing aids on low. WOW what a difference within a couple months her speech improved dramatically. Apparently even though she could hear, certain sounds like the vowels sounds were difficult for her. Since she couldn't hear everything clearly she was almost too timid to try. The fact that her twin sister talks nonstop didn't help matters. The change in her speech and her self confidence has been huge. I don't know if there is any possibility that a slight hearing problem might be involved but its worth a look. We continue to have her in speech therapy but her progress is rapid now. Good luck with everything!
