my daughter has 55% loss in her right ear and 75% in her left ear we opted for hearing aids because she is a very small child and our consultant did not like to operate on her because of her build, im so glad we went ahead with what the consultants decided to do because she is doing so well, its nice to actually sit down an teach her things without her getting frustrated with herself because she could not hear or understand anything. she will get checked every 6 months now untill she is 7 but thy have said its more than likely the loss will be permanent in her left ear. she is so looking forward to doing a lot more in school this term as last term she really struggled. i advise anyone who is . thinking of trying the hearing aids u will be suprised how well they work. for my daughter to say to me when i came down from up stairs that it was the first time she had ever heard me talking from up there made my heart melt and i knew i had made the right descision. All the best Laura xx

I have twin girls born at 24 weeks now 2 1/2..both with hearing loss. One has mild to moderate loss and the other is severly to profoundly deaf. The one with mild has hearing aids...works really well. Other has a cochlear implant and is starting to respond to verbal cues. I don't know if your baby has actual hearing loss or if there is something surgical to correct. If it is only mild loss count your blessings. with hearing aids and early intervention everything will be fine. Having a deaf child ( who is also almost blind) is very difficult.

My daughter (former 28 weeker) had a slight hearing loss in both her ears. They said the way she hears is the same as if our ears where clogged from changes in elevation. And that made her speech difficult to understand. However the only surgery we were told about was getting tubes in her ears. Its been about 5 months and her speech had improved A LOT! We havent had her hearing re-evaluated yet. Hopefully her hearing has improved!

Well, only you can decide this, but as a wise women once said, "Sometimes as mommy's, we must buck up and do what we have to do! " My own mother said that to me when my preemie was getting rolled into surgery at 2 days old....if you can give your baby a chance at hearing correctly, I know that you can do it! Stacey

Im not sure of the possible surgeries that they are considering (one is tubes) until they do some further/ follow up testing that I have requested. I am talking to my family doctor about it this week so he can help me make a decision. i guess im afraid of more of how i will repond to all of it.

I guess it depends on what kind of surgeries? Is it as simple as tubes? Emilie has had 8 sets of tubes,& now she has adult implants. Alot of times this will help, but if it is more evasive surgeries, I would check out all of your options before making any decisions. I went to Univ. of Michigan, Mott's Children Hosp. for all of Emilies issues, she was assessed & enrolled in speech therapy by 2 1/2 years by our local school district. If you have a children's hospital in your area, I would start there, and explore all areas....Get on this ASAP, the first years of life is when her speech and possible. Emilie is now in kindergarden & her teacher wears a microphone & Emilie wears 1 hearing aid during class only. She is doing great!

I was told that my 11 1/2 month old has a mild hearing loss in both ears. We were told that there is a couple of surgeries their can be done to try to correct it or we can just opt for hearing aids and speech therapy as she gets older. Of course I would love to have the miracle of surgery but if there is a chance that it doesnt work and she will have to have hearing aids and therapy anyways then Im not sure if I would want to put her through that..??

Hi Mariah,
my 5 year old now has severe hearing loss, only 60% in left year & nothing at all in the right. What kind of options are you looking at? This was found at about 2 years old, she has had several surgeries to try & correct, & we have traveled far & wide looking at several options. I have great ENT's, even 1 that specializes in NICU babies.. Talk soon
