My 6 month old son, holds his head at an angle. He can hold it straight but 99% of the time he holds it at an angle. We went back and looked at pictures and he has been doing that for a few months. He had a ped appt on Tuesdaya nd he doesn't have an ear infection and wasn't showing an eye problem that was easily detected. The ped told us to bring him back in if he still does it in a month. Has anyone else had this issue? Jesse is teething and one of his bottom teeth is through and the one next to it you can feel under the gum already. Could ear pain be caused by this and causing him to tilt his head all the time? Thanks.

It is called torticullis. My son had it also. Please call your pediatrician back and let them know you are very concerned and want to have it looked into further. It is caused by muscles being tighter on that side of the neck which cause his head to be turned that way. There are stretches that a physical therapist can do to help allieviate it and they can show you how to do them at home. My son's ended up causing a small flat spot on the back of his head from being in the same postion when he was laying down or reclined. He had it as a small infant when his head was still malable and he was often laying down or reclining (car seat, swing, bouncy, floor or sleeping). I know you need to take advice you get with a grain of salt, but I work at a preschool for kids with special needs and we've lots of kids with the same problem. There is no need to wait another month, especially since you said he's already been doing it for a while.

I was told that my son could have this as well.  But my ped is having him have a head CT done tomorrow cause she is worried about the size of his head.  Has any one had that done?

It's called tortacolous. (I'm sure I just massacred the spelling of it. :) At amy rate, my daughter who is 4 months was recently dx with it and we just started PT with EI. I can already see a difference.

My son also had his head tilted to one side (I forget which one, it's gone now) and actually preferred his right side. When the people from Early Intervention came to see him at 4 months they said he required some physical therapy. The therapist said that the muscles on one side of his neck were tight, just like the other poster said. She showed me how to do some mild stretching, so the muscles would loosen up. It worked pretty well. If that's what your son has, some therapy should be able to fix it. Good luck!

I haven't had this problem but a friend of mine's son had a problem with his neck muscles.  I forget what it was called (started with a T) but the muscles on one side of his neck were too tight causing his head to pull to one side.  He went to physiotherapy for a while and that fixed the problem.  It was diagnosed when he was born and was fixed by the time he started holding his head up.  If it continues I'd definately take him back to the ped and find out what's causing it.
