My daughter was born at 27weeks and was 2lbs. She also had a hernia. The doctors told me that it should go away within 2 years, especially when they start to use their abdominal muscles. Hers was caused by straining and her reflux problem. As soon as I start giving my daughter Rantidine (its a reflux medicine), her belly button hernia went away. She is straining as much so she isn't push her belly. I guess it all depends on the circumstances. My doctors told me that as long as I can push it down and its soft, I have nothing to worry about. She is now 5 months corrected, a healthy weight, and has a normal looking belly button.

Hey harley,
My daughter is a prem, born 6 weeks and 2 days early, she had 3 hernias... one in belly and one on each side of her groin... This was only picked up when my partner saw it as a lump in tha side of her leg... I was told that they would not remove the ones in her groin untill she was 3 months corrected... Changing nappy was world war 3 every single time, wouldnt sleep it was bad, untill i finaliy had to rush her into hospital one night coz i couldnt pop it back in myself... we then spoke to our ped and he was happy for her to have them both removed early.. the one in her belly is still there but has gone back in, only pops out when she crys, there is not alot u can do for the ones in the belly unless it is causing your baby pain, if its not its best to leave it as they say having it removed it takes a while to heal and your child will have to go thru alot just to have them removed.. My ped said it was best they left her belly alone, As for the groin ones they have now been gone for over a month, my daughter now sleeps thru the night and no more world war 3 with nappy change,
If you think its hurting your baby or your worried see your ped or your doctor, they will be able to give u the best advise on how to deal with it

My DD (born 27 weeks) also had one. I believe hers started clearing up (i.e., not looking like some kind of second stomach was emerging from her navel) around 10-12 months, although the hole in her abdominal wall is still there. Basically, it takes the kid fully using the abdominal wall (walking, running, pulling up, whatnot) for a while to help it close up. Just give it time. It's not likely to cause issues and lots and LOTS of preemies have them :)

One of my twins started displaying an umbilical hernia back in August while still in the unit. The drs and nurses said it would heal on it's own and not to worry. Well once we went to her pediatrician at a specialty nicu clinic she gave me the number of a peds surgeon to get a consult. She said she didn't believe it was an issue since E was only 5wks corrected but meeting with the surgeon might help me feel a little better. Within 5 seconds of him seeing her button he announced that it was definitely surgical and wanted to do it the following day. Due to scheduling we had to wait a week and a half (Monday before Halloween) bur let me tell you she came out of it a completely different baby. She doesn't act like eating bothers her and is just overall super happy and giggles nonstop. I guess my point is that if our ped had trusted her gut and let it go longer then we wouldn't have a totally happy baby. Not to mention she has been gaining weight like no ones business. Her sis had always run about 2lbs bigger but she is quickly closing that gap.

My boy also has a belly buttom hernia. I thought it was because he cries a lot, never thought about preemies. the doc said we must wait until he turns 2 years old. If it doesn´t get any getter, he´ll need a surgery.:-( His hernia is really big, I wonder if it hurts somehow. And it seems like it has air inside his belly buttom.

When I was in the hospital she obvious had a hernia but no one said anything til I asked n they said she had one like I was suppose to know. Anyways the doctor told me if it doesn't go away by the time she 5-7 then she would have surgery and then she might still need cosmetic surgery. They just said to watch to make sure it doesn't get hard or red/purple

My daughter was born with Gastroschisis. She to has a belly button hernia. but when she was born she had every thing outside of her body. She just now i starting to heal and she will be 2 in march, she was born at 36 weeks at 3lbs. Her hernia to start with went from the bottom of her Rib cage to the under side of her belly button.. the only thing they told me is it will heal on it's own or they will have to do another surgery to repair it.. I know it will heal it just takes time and sometime it just take a little longer the the Average... {should say what the doctors think is Average}.. Hope this is a little helpful.. if u have any question please feel free to look me up any time... best wishes to u n ur little guy... Take care
