My daughter was born on March 1, 1991 at 3lbs. 9oz. ( 6 wks. premature). She was sent to Driscoll Children's Hospital the night she was born, where she stayed for 26 days. That is how long it took her to reach her mandatory 5 lbs. before she could go home.

My daughter was born at 32 weeks. She was 4lbs 2oz and had to have an inch of her small intestine removed when she was born. After her surgery and stomach being pumped she weighted 3lbs 14oz. She is now 38lbs at 5 years old. She is still tiny but at least her intestines are good now.

My son was born 5.5 weeks premature, weighing 5 pounds 4.5 ounces, 18 3/4 inches long. At 5 months he weighed in at 14 pounds 12 ounces and 27.5 inches long. He was actually decently on the charts non-adjusted until about 9 months when he dropped off in weight completely. We've worked hard, and he's sneaking back up the charts, but at age 8.5 years, he just hit 49 pounds fully clothed.

My twins were born at 29 wks. My daughter weighed 2 lbs 3oz & 13" long and my son was 2 lbs 15 oz 15.5" long. They turned 3years old in Nov. and my daughter weighs 27lbs and 35" tall while my son is 33 lbs and 37" tall. I am truly blessed. People always comment on how small my daughter is for her age and I just say it is genetic because I am 5'1" :-)

My daughter was born at 26 weeks due to HELLP. She weighed 1lb 7oz and was 12 inches long. We spent 90 days in the NICU and had several complications... NEC, blood transfusions, etc... She is now 10 1/2 months old and weighs 19lbs and is 26 inches long. She is somewhat delayed with gross motor skills but does great with fine motor skills. She has PT and OT every week and is pretty much on track with her adjusted age.

I am so sorry for your loss. I can't begin to imagine the hurt you felt losing one of your babies. Congrads on the other. I believe these babies choose thier parents for a reason. My Tyler has taught me learn patience. He was not so lucky as far as his health, be he is still with me. We didn't expect him to be here past birth, then age 5, then age 10. He will be 18 this July 15. Good luck with your sweetpea.

My son was born December 15,1996 at 30wks weighing 4lb 3oz and 16in long at birth. We had him in a very small hospital and they sent him home with just a feeding tube less than a week in the hospital, weighing only 3lb 10oz. He was my first baby and needless to say it was the scariest time of my life. He is now 13yrs old and weighs 96lbs and almost taller than his mom!

My daughter was born 6 weeks premature, weighing 3lb. 11oz. and 17 1/2 in long. She literally fit in the palm of my husband's hand. (6' 5" tall, 280lbs. big guy) She was in the hospital for 2 weeks to the day. She did not have the suck/breathe/swallow reflex and she jaundiced a bit, but other than that, she was perfect, just tiny. This was in 1993. She will turn 17 next month, and I tell you. You would not know that she started her journey in this world so tiny. They warned us of all kinds of development problem possibilities. She is in the top 5 of her junior class, 5' 7" tall, 133 lbs, and drop dead gorgeous. She lives life like she came into this life - in a hurry.

The best advice I can give to any parent - preemie or full term - THERE ARE NO TWO BABIES THAT ARE IDENTICAL. The only information doctors can give you are STATISTICS. There are full term babies that do not walk until they are 18 months, doctors don't "warn" their mothers. They just say "(s)he'll walk when (s)he is ready". Same goes for preemies. Now, I am not saying that you shouldn't listen to your doctor by any means. Just watch your baby. As they develop, and you pay attention to their development, you will KNOW when there is actually a problem. Most preemies, they say develop slower. My daughter never did. She was walking at 10 months, but so was my youngest daughter who was born full term. Which one was late/early in development? No one knows your baby like you do. You carried him/her in your body, you had the closest relationship during that time, and you will continue to have that relationship always. They call it "Mother's Intuition" for a reason. And that is the way God made us.

Feb 24 it will be 7 years since my preemies were born at 24 6/7 weeks. Noah was 11 oz and died after 24 hours of life. Austin was 26 oz and 11.5 " long. He was hospitalized in Sioux Falls and Omaha (for a surgery) for 104 days, then discharged before his due date. For the first 4 years he was at the 10th percentile for weight and now he has a tummy. We still have some lung issues but he has never been back to the hospital since he was born. We were hermits as the drs recommended for the first year of life and it has paid off. Congrats to all the preemie moms, you will make it !!

my daughter was born 11 weeks premmy and weighed 1 lb 5 oz and was approx 12 inches long, She was always small as she grew up and was behind in skills by approx 3 mths compared to my other 2 full term children. She is now 19yrs old and only 5 ft tall and skinny, but very healthy, the height is due to genetics in both sides of the family. She did have trouble with hearing when a toddler and she has to wear glasses full time, but she is a normal teenager. When she was born she was only given a 5% chance of living, we proved the drs wrong, we gave her lots of love and I think thats what saved her more than anything in the world.

Both my boys were extremely early. My oldest is now 18 yrs and is 5'7" wieghs about 220. He was born at 24 weeks and weighed 1 lb 9 oz. He was born screaming like a term baby, was just itty bitty, I was only 19 when I had him and was the scarriest thing up to that point. Then just 11 months later, my second was born at just 23 weeks. weighing 1 lb 6 oz. Everything that they tell you that could go wrong did go wrong. He is now almost 18 and weighs 72 lbs. He is severely mentally retarded with autistic features, severe. Is still in diapers, non-verbal, epileptic and mild cerebral palsy, also had total retinal detachments in both eyes. Dont get me wron, I love my babies. Tyeh are my reason for being, but I wonder if doctors should go to such extreme measures to save babies that are so sick when they are born. My youngest has no quality of life and is about to undergo another major surgery to have a feeding tube placed and an abdominal hernia fixed and his stomach wrapped around his esophagus due to severe acid refulx. This will be his 8th surgery and possibly the most scarry, and risky. And let me just say, Tennessee is the worst for services for kids like Tyler. I am a single mother and have been most of thier lives and it's the hardest thing one will ever do, raising a child with multiple disabilities in this state.

I'm very happy to say that after a very difficult start in life with many respiratory problems they just turned 21 years old and you would never know they were not born full term! No residual problems. They are both healthy and very athletic! Their weight gain was quite normal after they were released from the hospital. After their first year they both improved on a daily basis and never looked back.....We were very lucky!
