Our son was born at 28 weeks, 3 lbs just two days after Christmas in 1992. His edd was March 18. I was 40 years old. They predicted he would be 1 1/2 lbs but much to their surprise he was really big for just 28 week gestation.

I was 6 months pregnant when my water broke and was rushed to the hospital by ambulance. James was born a week later by natural birth. he came out so fast there wasn't even time for any drugs! We were told all the things that could go wrong right up front by the doctors. My husband and I just hugged one another and cried and then we put him in God's hands. We bought a few books on premmies to educate ourselves to be prepared. He was so cute, looked like a little doll, and wore little doll size clothes. We were just so thankful that he was healthy. There's even so much more technology now days than 20 years ago!

I remember pumping and take him breast milk every day to the hospital to freeze because the doctors and nurses all said breast milk was best for premmies so I pumped and pumped for my little guy. They had to put it through a tube in his nose and he would have spells. Thank God he only needed one blood transfusion and my husband gave him blood. There were no other complications and we are eternally grateful. He was in NICU for two months and came home at 5 1/2 lbs. after he finally latched on all by himself, no more tubes! That was a glorious day!

It was very challenging and tough for us to go through. We had a very strong faith and many were praying. I still remember all the bells going off when he would stop breathing and how scarey that was. He would go up and then down. He came home on a monitor and after he kept tearing off his leads and that thing was going off every time I'd drift off to sleep, it was like brain washing! So I called the doctor and ask to take him off after a month of no spells. I continued though to watch him like a mommy eagle!

Each day got better and better and he grew bigger and stronger. He knew he was loved! We were there at the hospital every day!

James is now 20 years old, 6 foot tall, very healthy, handsome and smart. He attends UT Permian Basin University in West Texas. You can see him on my Facebook page at http://www.facebook.com/sueseward

Blessings,
Sue

My son was actually born at 36 weeks and weighed 8lbs. Scared to think how much it would have been if we went all the way to 40.

1 week early. He weighed 7lbs 14 oz. He didn't have to go to NICU but he was hospitalized with severe jaundice and it took him 20 mins to breath normally on his own.

My son was born at 28 weeks and 5 days. He weighed 3lbs 3oz and the doctors and nurses called him "gigantor" because he was still the biggest preemie. He would've been big. At almost 3 months early he spent 2 months in NICU but he is now a happy, healthy, 7-year-old. One would never know.
