My baby is still in the NICU.

I expect to have him home at the beginning of January, '10.

By then it will have been 4 months having my baby in the NICU..

But he is doing so good he may even get to come home sooner!

I just got to bring my baby home on Christmas Day! She was in the NICU for about 6-7 weeks. She was born at 28 weeks. I know this time is very tough, but you will get thru and you'll have a beautiful baby at home in the end. Just keep asking questions and stay tuned in to what is going on with your little one. As a mom it's tough, not knowing what will happen. But just have faith and you and your baby will be together very soon! :)

They were 4 lbs 2 oz & 4 lbs 6 oz. Now at 4 1/2 months they are both 8 lbs 3 oz and continue to do wonderfully!

My little girl was born at 36 weeks and spent 6 days in the NICU, then 5 days at a level 2 hospital so she could be closer to home. She was taken from me the night she was born and transferred to the NICU in Boston (a good hour from me). I was released the next day so I could go up there and see her. We weren't able to stay in Boston with her, so we had to drive back and forth everyday. It was very hard on us.

Thank goodness she is home and healthy now!

Hi

My youngest son R.J was in the N.I.C.U for a month. He is turning 3 years old on the 29th of this month. He was so lifeless at first. Now he is doing a lot better. He has several health conditions now though. He has asthma, which he has to have 2-3 breathing treatments a day. He developed phenmonia when he was just 2 weeks old, which caused his right lung to collapse. He also developed R.S.V at only a few days old. R.J was born at 2 months premature. I am very proud to say that R.J is doing wonderful now. He does have a speech delay and has speech therapy twice a week, and he will probably have it throughout his school years as well.

I really wish you all the best with your little boy. Just keep your hopes high and keep your faith in God

my son came home on his 12th day of life. he was born like 4 weeks early weighed 3lbs and 8 oz at birth, he could breath on his own and didnt have any complications at birth. they just kept him to monitor his growth. the hardest thing was seeing the other mothers go home with their children and i couldnt, seeing the them with their children in their rooms was hard for me. it didnt hit me until i was discharged and had to go home alone with my hubby. i cried my eyes out that night. i was one of the lucky women whose preemie didnt have to stay too long and was overall healthy. he is doing better now he had some complications later own due to other things. he is 5 now.

My daughter was in the NICU for 4 months. She was born at 23 weeks at 1 lb. 3 ozs. The doctors usually try to have them home by their original due date. Well as close as possible given there are no major complecations, of coarse. She was released from the hospital just a few days after my original due date, but was still on oxygen. She remained on the oxygen for six months. It made things at home a little harder with a newborn, but we made it through.

My daughter was born 11 weeks early and spent 50 days in the NICU. We came home 4 weeks prior to her due date. She was considered a "feeder/grower" at this point, and they trusted that we could keep up with her at home. Looking back it really did go by fast, but at the time, I felt like it was the longest wait of my life.

The younger years are very tough for the parents and children, I did it being a single mom. I was totally by myself and spent may may nights, weeks at the hospital after his birth. The hospital visit pretty much stop by the time he was 5 yrs. So just hang in there as it is a very tough road. Just keep the faith!!

My son was born 6 weeks early and only spent 11 days in the NICU. The docs led us to believe that he would have to stay in until he was "term". But he did so well that we got to bring him home just before Christmas... the best gift of all!

My son was born at 27.4 weeks old in November. 3lb 2oz and with a due date of January 16th. They said he would stay until then. But we got the best Christmas present that year. After 52 days in the NICU he came home 5 days before.

We were SO BLESSED with our twins born 6 weeks prem. Elana was in NICU for 1 night, and Christiaan (boy with Dows syndrome) was in NICU for 3 nights. Both of them came home when I went home. Both breastfed within 24 hours.

Both of them were bigger than the average 34 weeker. I read that the average 34 weeker weigh 2.1 kg (4.63 pounds). Elana was 2.25kg (4.96 pounds) and Christiaan 2.75kg (6.06 pounds). I think that this is way they didn't have to stay in the hospital.

My daughter was born at 29 wks 3 days. She weighted 2 pds 10 oz and was not breathing when she was born via emergency c-section. She spent a total of 5 1/2 wks in the NICU/Step Down Unit. They wouldn't let her leave till she hit all her goals, be 4 pds 10 oz, drink from a bottle, and have no d-stats.

My triplets were born at 32 weeks. 3.14 3.10 3.5. My son was in the NICU for 3 1/2 months due to open heart surgery at 2 weeks of age. My other son and daughter were in for one month. What kept me going and staying strong was that they were in the best care possible. The longer they are there it's better for them in the long run. They are now 4 1/2 and all extremely healthy. Pratice, patience, love and tolerance.

Hi my premature baby is now 16 years old and 6ft 4 inches!! He was in hospital just short of 6 weeks. I found the hardest part was maintaining breastfeeding, especially when your baby is born before the sucking reflex develops. Amazingly though at around 4 months when I visited a maternal and child health clinic I was told I was "over feeding" him - because he was so big and had gained a lot of weight really fast - I had started a small amount of solids as the milk didn't seem to settle him (he never seemed full), this was recommended by my doctor and it worked fantastic. I'm not sure what was the 'miracle' in those early years of his development, as you would never tell that he was born 3 months early. I was very fussy about his food, offered everything and to this day have never offered my children caffeine drinks or high salt/fat/sugar diets, just lots of fruit veg meats dairy etc - who knows.

Any time having a baby in the NICU is tough, but I doubt there is a mother out there who didn't completely trust the wonderful nurses who cared for her baby! It was hard to leave her (she was in another state), but I called the nurses every time I woke up to pump breast milk and they gave me a report. NICU nurses are angels and they love your baby!!!!
