My daughter was born at 25 weeks 1 day and weighed 1 lb. 2 oz. She spent 3 months and 4 days in the NICU, came home the morning we had a blizzard (we lived in Boston then) and went back to the PICU 8 days later for 2 weeks with RSV.

My daughter was born at 33 1/2 weeks. She weighed 4 lbs 10 oz and they kept her in the NICU for three weeks. It sucked, but I'm glad she got the help she needed. Good luck with your baby!

We were lucky under the circumstances with our lil guy. He was born at 33.5 weeks and was only in the NICU for 11 days. They considered him an "overweight" baby considering his term. Now he is an active, happy, healthy 6yr old in First Grade!

My twin girls were born 7 weeks premature and were in the NICU for only 6 days. I did have a steroid shot to help develop their lungs at 29 weeks though because they were growing at different rates and the doctors had a feeling they may need to take them out early. They were in the step down nursery at the hospital until they were 3 weeks and 6 weeks though. They were 4lbs. 7 oz. and 3 lbs. 6oz when they were born. Hang in there I know it's the hardest thing you'll ever have to do, but when your baby comes home it will all be worth it!

My daughter was born in Aug 2000 @ 25 weeks. She weighed 1lb 12oz when she was born. She came home 89 days later (Oct 20) weighing about 5.5lbs. She wasn't due until November 14.

Today, she is a happy, healthy, beautiful, smart, 9 year-old. Looking at her, you would never know she was a preemie.

My son was inthe NICU for 30 days. He was only 4 weeks early but had some major heart conditions and lung conditions. It isn't easy. He was ready to come home at one time and then had a regress. It is very emothional but I thank God he was still in the NICU when he regressed. Don't rush things, makre sure he is going to be perfect when you get him home. He is much safer in the NICU then in your home. Keep your fatih and continue to watch his progress. You will know whenit is time.

My son was in the NICU for 2 weeks. He was 34 1/3, hospital exact term, and he basically was required to breathe, suck, and swallow at the same time before they let him go. Although he was 4lbs 3oz and he was basically healthy so there was no reason to keep him once he got feeding down. When he went home he was a whole 5lbs. Looking at him now I can't believe how small he was.

my daughter was in the NICU for only a week and a half... much shorter than some of the other answers im reading! she was a month and a half early, weighed 4 lbs. she had some breathing and feeding problems that caused her to stay in the NICU longer than anticipated... afterward, they moved her to pediatrics for another 5 days.

My daughter was in the NICU for 17 days. She was born at 35 weeks 4 days. I was told to expect to take her home by her due date. My daughter just all of a sudden sprung it on us... one day, it was like, "she's not eating from a bottle at all." and the next day, "she's taking a bottle at every feeding." then it was time for her to come home. It was awesome. We were so excited.

Our son Erik was born at 25 wks, weighing 1lb. 7oz. He spent 3 months in the NICU. In retrospect, that long, terrifying and weary journey was a blessing in many parts. It taught us extra patience, attentiveness, awareness & strength-even today. Erik will be turning 10 in 1 month. He is a healthy, happy, handsome, race-car & super hero loving fourth grader. Preemies are indeed born survivors-the strongest people I know. God bless.

My son Erick was born at 29 weeks. He was 2.8 lbs. He spent the first 45 days in the level 3 Nicu. then he was flown to a hospital closer to our home (an hour away). But he was only there for a weekend then he began to asperate his formula and was flown back to Denver. He spent another 43 days in the level 3 NICU. He was back on a resperator and was very sick. When he was in the hospital closer to home he stopped breathing totally. I can say it was the hardest time of my life. I wanted more than anything for my son to come home. But once he did it took me till he was over a year to feel comfortable enough to not check on him through out the night. I still to this day have fear of him not breathing or stopping when i'm not whatching. Even after my second child (he was full term) i did the same thing and checked on him also.

Erick spent 82 days in the NICU. I understand how bad you want your baby home but remember he needs to get to a point that he can be at home and healthy once he gets there. You don't want him there and something to happen. The Lord will watch over him and you. Don't rush it, if i could do it again i would have left him in Denver where he would have more exsperanced care.

Oh and the dr.s had told me at least 5 diffrent times that he would be coming home and then they said no. That he wasn't ready.

First, congrats on the birth of your baby!

As for homecoming, it's hard to predict. I'm sure the docs and nurses have already told you - if all goes well, it'll probably be close to your due date.

I know it's hard, but all I can say is don't rush it! I know there's nothing you want more than to have your baby at home with you where s/he belongs, but being at home is not as simple as it sounds. You're going to be completely without medical support. When I brought my 29-weeker home, it felt scary not having a nurse right there to intervene if my baby had an Apnea Spell, for example.

Just be as patient as you can. Give your baby the time s/he needs to grow strong so that when s/he finally does come home, it can be a joyful experience.

My boys were in the NICU for 3.5 months. They were born at 27 wks and weighed 2lbs. They had eye surgery and intestinal surgery for NEC. Braden is a happy healthy 4 yr old and Logan passed away 2 yrs ago when he was 20 months old. It was a long hard journey, but I would not be who I am today without the experience.

My baby was born 14 wks early... 26 wks 2 days into my pregnancy. She was 1 lb 7.5 oz & spent 90 days in the NICU. My due date was March 26 & we went home March 21! I know it is a roller coaster ride of emotions that you are going through, but in the end it will all be worth it. I waited so long to take my little girl home, but as that day arrived - I didn't want to leave. I grew so attached to all the nurses & RT's - they were my family... my support system through some of the worst times and the most wonderful times too. Be prepared for missing them - find a way to stay in contact with them if you can. They will want to keep track of your little one's progress from home. I keep in touch w/ many of our nurses through facebook. I also keep in touch w/ the other NICU parents. They have become so special to me. They know exactly what I went through. The first days at home are exhausting, so rest now while you can. Praying you get to take your little one home sooner than expected! Enjoy every moment!!!

I had a c-section when I was 28 wks along. My sons heart rate kept dropping. I had high blood pressure. He was 2lbs, 13 in. He was in nicu for 3 mos. then transferred to imcn, a step up. We were making plans for him to come home when he contracted rsv. He was then transfered via jet to ky to be put on E.C.M.O., a heart lung bypass. They told us they didn't think he would make it. But my Lord and Savior had other plans. They could not explain it but "somehow" they said he turned a corner, and was able to come back to the hospital he was born at. After a total of seven months our miracle child, the light of my life, got to come home. He will be 7 in december. We have had alot of ups and downs, mostly ups. But I am so thankful for him, and some of the little things that some parents might take for granted, just make our day. Jesus Christ has taught my husband and I patience, gratefullness, understanding, more faith in him, and so many other things. If you give in to the Lord and just say, your will be done, you will be amazed at your blessings. Hardest and best thing I've ever done in my life! God bless you all

Hi my premature baby is now 16 years old and 6ft 4 inches!! He was in hospital just short of 6 weeks. I found the hardest part was maintaining breastfeeding, especially when your baby is born before the sucking reflex develops. Amazingly though at around 4 months when I visited a maternal and child health clinic I was told I was "over feeding" him - because he was so big and had gained a lot of weight really fast - I had started a small amount of solids as the milk didn't seem to settle him (he never seemed full), this was recommended by my doctor and it worked fantastic. I'm not sure what was the 'miracle' in those early years of his development, as you would never tell that he was born 3 months early. I was very fussy about his food, offered everything and to this day have never offered my children caffeine drinks or high salt/fat/sugar diets, just lots of fruit veg meats dairy etc - who knows.

My daughter was born at 35 weeks but only 2.6 lbs. She spent only 21 days in the NICU and came home weighing 3 1/2 lbs!! Any time having a baby in the NICU is tough, but I doubt there is a mother out there who didn't completely trust the wonderful nurses who cared for her baby! It was hard to leave her (she was in another state), but I called the nurses every time I woke up to pump breast milk and they gave me a report. NICU nurses are angels and they love your baby!!!!
